Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The number one ranked team in Division II by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) handed the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team a 103-72 setback Friday night at Metropolitan State University of Denver. The 31 point deficit was the worst setback by the Skyhawks this season.
"We played hard tonight but Metro competed at a level that we didn't match," said Fort Lewis College associate head coach
Bob Pietrack.
The Roadrunners (22-1, 19-0 RMAC) jumped out to an 11-0 lead before
Nick Tomsick hit a three-point field goal at 16:01 in the first half. Metro State took a 52-33 lead at the break and led by as many as 39 points with 7:45 left in regulation.
Fort Lewis (14-9, 11-8 RMAC) was led by
Alex Herrera's double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Herrera's blocked shot in the first half tied him for the school record for most blocks in a season (84), which he set last season.
Nick Tomsick added 14 points and
Cade Kloster came off the bench to add 11. Fort Lewis netted 41.7 percent from the floor and 44.2 percent from long range. On the other end of the court, the Roadrunners netted 51.4 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from behind the arc.
Metro State out-rebounded the Skyhawks, 42-29, and scored 28 points off of the Skyhawks 17 turnovers. The Roadrunners committed only five turnovers and out-scored FLC in the paint, 44-18.
Fort Lewis will travel to Regis University Saturday night for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
