DENVER, Colo. – Regis University outscored the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team by 21 points in the second half (49-28) to overcome a 24-point halftime deficit and almost pull out an upset win, but the Skyhawks hung on for an 83-80 win.

Senior center Alex Herrera needed 32 points entering tonight's game to reach the 1,000th point mark, and he eclipsed it by one, scoring 33 points against the Rangers for 1,001 career points.

"Regis played excellent in the second half," said Fort Lewis College associate head coach Bob Pietrack.  "We were able to gut it out in the end.  We had a good defensive stop and a rebound which helped us close the game.  It was a good team win for us, especially on a four game road trip. It's hard to win RMAC road games.  We can't wait to get home to Whalen Gymnasium."

Fort Lewis led 55-31 at the break and shot an impressive 68.8 percent from the floor (22-32) and 66.7 percent from long range (6-9) in the first half, while holding Regis to a 39.4 percent from the floor and 20 percent from long range.

The Rangers came out of the second half and outscored Fort Lewis 39-17 in a 15-minute period to tie the game and take a two point lead, but clutch free throw shooting led the Skyhawks to the road win.

Fort Lewis went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 34 seconds of regulation to regain the lead.  Nick Tomsick made 3-of-4 attempts in that span, as he finished the night 7-of-8 from the line.

Alex Herrera and Tomsick combined for 75 percent of the Skyhawks 83 points.  Herrera led both teams with a career high 33 points on 13-of-16 field goal shooting and 6-of-9 free throws.  Herrera also added 12 rebounds, two steals, an assist and a blocked shot.  His blocked shot gave him 85 on the season, breaking the Skyhawk season record he set last year.

Tomsick sank 10-of-16 field goals as part of his 29 points. He added two assists and three caroms.

Fort Lewis finished the game shooting 54.7 percent from the floor and 35.3 percent from long range. After making 6-of-9 three-point field goals in the first half, Fort Lewis went 0-8 in the second half.

Regis was held to 39.4 percent from the floor in the first half but came out and shot 59.4 percent in the second half.  The Rangers were led by Joseph Bodman's 21 points and eight rebounds.

The win snapped a four-game road losing streak by Fort Lewis.  They will wrap up the regular season at home Feb. 28 against Western State and March 1 against Colorado Mesa.
