DENVER, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team opened the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season at Regis University today. The Skyhawks dropped both doubleheader games, falling 5-0 in the first game and 22-6 in the second game.
"It was a touch day today," said Fort Lewis College head softball coach
Kira Zeiter. "One rough inning in each game and when we take care of that, it will be a different story. We fought hard but as a team we want to get different results. Tomorrow is a new day and we plan to come out and play solid, consistent softball."
In the first game of the day, Regis took a 1-0 lead after four scoreless innings by both teams. They rattled off four runs in the sixth inning to earn a 5-0 shutout win.
Kamali'i Peneku went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Skyhawks offensively.
Destinee DeHerrera added one hit to account for the Skyhawks three team hits.
Victoria Johnson pitched the first five innings of the game, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and fanning two batters.
Katie Watkins pitched the final inning for Fort Lewis, surrendering one run (unearned) on one hit.
Regis totaled five runs on five hits and five runs batted in.
In game two of the day, the Skyhawks took a 1-0 lead after four and a half innings before Regis added six runs in the bottom of the fourth. FLC cut the lead to 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning after they added one run in the fifth inning and three in the top of the sixth. A five fun sixth inning by the Rangers gave RU an 11-5 lead with one inning remaining. The Skyhawks posted a run in the top of the seventh but fell short, 11-6.
Chelsea Rodriguez went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and one run scored. Peneku added two hits while five more Skyhawks tallied one hit each as Fort Lewis finished the game with 10 hits.
Myndee Thompson contributed one hit, one run scored and one run batted in.
Four Skyhawks saw action in the circle in game two.
Kiley Raica started and worked 3.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits. Raica was the pitcher of record and moves to 2-4 on the season.
The losses moves Fort Lewis to 4-8 on the season and 0-2 in the RMAC. Regis improves to 3-9 overall and 2-0 in league games.
Both teams will face each other again in a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch will go out at 11 a.m.
