GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Senior
Ally Kvidera scored six goals in the season opening game to lead the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win at Colorado Mesa University Saturday afternoon from Walker Field in Grand Junction.
"We played really well all round, offensively and defensively," said Fort Lewis College head women's lacrosse coach Kelsey MacDonald. "It was a good team win. Our defense played unbelievable in the second half and pretty much won the game in the second half. Our offense was strong in the first half and the defense came through when we needed them to."
Brook Wineland gave the Skyhawks the first goal of the game at 28:39 which was followed by Kvidera's three goals for a 4-0 lead seven minutes into the game. Fort Lewis, which led the entire game, finished the half with 15 shots, 11 draw controls and nine ground balls to take an 11-3 lead at the break.
Fort Lewis' offense slowed down in the second half, netting three goals by
Abby Kvidera,
Jessica Norby and
Ally Kvidera, but the Skyhawks made seven of their eight saves of the game in the second half.
FLC outshot the Mavericks 25-18 and tallied 15 draw controls to CMU's eight.
Ally Kvidera finished the game with seven points (six goals, seven assists) and seven shots. Wineland finished with four points (two goals, two assists), followed by
Abby Kvidera's three points (three goals). Norby,
Kathryn Dunn and
Kylie Smith each added a goal for the Skyhawks as they finished the game with 25 team shots.
Alyssa Spencer played the entire game in goal, making eight saves to improve to 1-0 on the season.
The Skyhawks next competition is Saturday, March 1 at Adams State for their first game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season.
