Softball Splits at Regis in RMAC Opening Weekend; Rodriguez Ties Career Home Run Record

DENVER, Colo. – After nearly a two hour weather delay, the Fort Lewis College softball team started Sunday's doubleheader with a 10-1 six inning win at Regis University.  The Skyhawks dropped the night cap game, 8-4, as Regis won 3-of-4 games in the series.
 
"Game one today was a solid win," said Fort Lewis head coach Kira Zeiter. "It shows us what we are capable of as a team, and that is what we need to build on during practice this week. Next weekend we need to play a solid seven innings in both games."
 
Destinee DeHerrera paced the Skyhawks offense in game one, going 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and a one run scored.
 
Fort Lewis started the game in the first inning with back-to-back home runs by Chelsea Rodriguez and DeHerrera.  With two outs and Kaitlyn Bending on second base, Rodriguez hit her third home run of the season.  DeHerrera followed with her second home run this season to give the Skyhawks a 3-0 lead after one inning.
 
DeHerrera drove in the fourth run of the game after she singled through the left side to drive in Bending in the top of the third inning.
 
The Skyhawks took a 6-0 lead after five and a half innings when Rodriguez notched her second home run of the game that also drove in Adriana Rosthenhausler.  Rodriguez' home run marked her 33rd career home run, tying her in the Fort Lewis career record books with Jenna Peters for the most home runs in school history (33).
 
Regis tallied their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, the Skyhawks added four more insurance runs to win the run-ruled game, 10-1.
 
The Skyhawks posted 11 hits, with DeHerrera's four hits a game high.  Myndee Thompson also chipped in three hits and Rodriguez added two as three Skyhawks recorded multiple hits.

Victoria Johnson improved to 2-3 on the year after she pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and no earned runs.
 
In game two of the day and the fourth of the series, Rodriguez helped FLC to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after she singled to the left side to score Missy Fundora
 
With a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning, Mariah Stuart recorded a run batted in that scored Thompson.  Fundora then hit a sacrifice fly to score Hayley Bolyard for a 3-0 lead.
 
Regis knotted the game in the bottom of the second after taking advantage of three Skyhawk errors to score three runs.  Regis added two more runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth for an 8-3 lead. 
 
Thompson cut the lead to 8-4 in the top of the sixth inning when she hit her first home run of the season. The Skyhawks then went 0-3 after the home run and three-and-out in the seventh inning.
 
Kiley Raica was the pitcher of record in the second game, pitching the first 4.1 innings. She allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits.
 
Fort Lewis (5-9, 1-3 RMAC) will host a six-game pod next weekend at Aspen Field.  On Saturday, Feb. 28, the Skyhawks will play host to Adams State at 10 a.m. and Western New Mexico at 2 p.m.  On Sunday, the Skyhawks will start off with a 10 a.m. game against the Mustangs and closing the weekend against Adams State at 2 p.m.  Both Adams State and Western New Mexico will face each other each day at 12 p.m.
