Softball Opens Season With a Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Fort Lewis College softball team opened their season in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Montana State, Billings Desert Stinger.  The Skyhawks dropped the opening game to Texas Woman's University, 11-3, but came back to defeat Texas-Permian Basin, 5-3.

No. 14 Texas Woman's University took a 3-0 lead after one-half inning, but the Skyhawks responded to cut the lead to 3-2 after their first outing at the plate. Chelsea Rodriguez and Adriana Rosthenhauser each crossed home plate in the first inning after a fielding error in center field.

After three scoreless innings by both teams, TWU took a 6-2 lead in the fifth before Myndee Thompson drove in Rosthenhauser for her second run of the day.  It proved to be the Skyhawks last score of the game as TWU added five more unanswered runs.

Victoria Johnson started in the circle for the Skyhawks and went 4.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings pitched.

"With this being the first game of the season, we noticed positives and things that we want to focus on for the rest of the weekend," said Fort Lewis College head softball coach Kira Zeiter.  "We did a nice job of hitting line drives and ground balls, and we want to focus on taking the runners we have on base and hitting them home."

In the night camp game against Texas-Permian Basin, Missy Fundora broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of sixth inning after hitting a two-run home run.  With two outs and Mariah Stuart on base after being hit by a pitch, Fundora went yard to give the Skyhawks their first win of the season.

Fundora finished the game with one hit and two runs scored.  Chelsea Rodriguez and Destinee DeHerrera each tallied two hits in the game.

Kiley Raica pitched all seven innings, allowing 10 hits, two earned runs and fanning five batters.

Fort Lewis will return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. (PST) against Simon Fraser and at 7 p.m. (PST) against Hawaii-Hilo.
