Softball Finishes Weekend with 8-4 Win

Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Chelsea Rodriguez drove in three runs and Destinee DeHerrera added two hits and two runs batted in to help the Fort Lewis College softball team to an 8-4 win Sunday afternoon against Notre Dame de Namur University from Majestic Park in Las Vegas, Nev.  The win capped off the weekend with the Skyhawks going 3-2 in their first games of the season.
 
The Skyhawks started the game with four runs in the top of the first inning.  Rodriguez hit her second home run of the season to drive in Adriana Rosthenhausler and Kaitlyn BendingDestinee DeHerrera followed Rodriguez with her first home run of the season to give the Skyhawks a 4-0 lead.
 
A home run by NDDNU cut the lead to 4-1 after one full inning of action.  In the top of the second inning, Bending reached base on a walk, followed by Rosthenhauser who was hit by a pitch and Rodriguez who also walked.  With one out and the bases loaded, DeHerrera hit a single to center field to drive in Bending. Rodriguez crossed home plate after scoring on a throwing error and Rosthenhauser added the third run of the inning and seventh of the game after she scored on a passed ball. 
 
In the top of the third inning, Mariah Stuart reached based after drawing a walk.  She advanced to second after a passed ball and then to third after Missy Fundora notched a single.  Stuart then recorded the Skyhawks eighth and final run of the game when she scored on a throwing error.
 
NDDNU added single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings, but the Skyhawks held on for the 8-4 win.
 
Kiley Raica pitched the complete game, allowing only two earned runs on seven hits.  She added three strikeouts without walking one batter. 
 
The Skyhawks finished the game with nine hits and eight walks.  Bending, Rosthenhauser and Rodriguez each tallied two hits, with Rodriguez and Bending accounting for five runs batted in.
 
The Skyhawks will travel to Canyon, Texas Feb. 14-16 for five games against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Eastern New Mexico, Angelo State, West Texas A&M and Tarleton State.
