Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Fort Lewis College softball team earned their second straight win of the season after posting a 9-1, five inning win over Simon Fraser University Saturday afternoon from Las Vegas, Nevada. The Skyhawks would even their record at 2-2 on the young season after a 14-6 setback against Hawaii-Hilo.
In the opening game of the day,
Missy Fundora hit a home run in the Skyhawks first at-bat of the game, tying the game at 1-1 after one inning of action. In the second inning,
Mariah Stuart hit a single down the right field line to drive in Kamali'I Peneku as the Skyhawks took a 2-1 led.
The Skyhawks would then rattle off seven more unanswered runs to earn the run-rule win, 9-1.
Victoria Johnson pitched all five innings for the Skyhawks, allowing just one earned run and three hits. She also fanned two batters while walking one.
"This was a good team win," said Fort Lewis College head softball coach
Kira Zeiter. "The entire team contributed and we can feel good about the way we played."
Against Hawaii-Hilo, the Skyhawks trailed 7-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning before
Myndee Thompson doubled to left center to drive in
Destinee DeHerrera who reached base after hitting a double.
The Skyhawks cut the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the third inning after
Chelsea Rodriguez hit a two-run homerun. Trailing by five, the Skyhawks produced a three-run fourth inning to bring them within two runs, 8-6, of tying Hawaii Hilo. Fundora hit a single to drive in
Jeovanna Rios.
Kaitlyn Bending grounded out but drove in
Hayley Bolyard for an unearned run. Adriana Rosthnhauser hit a sacrifice fly that scored Stuart for the third run of the inning, but UHH would score six unanswered runs for the 14-6, six inning win.
"We battled hard," said Zeiter. "A few key mistakes here and there and it is a different story, and this competition will only make us better."
The Skyhawks will wrap up the weekend with a single game on Sunday against Notre Dame de Namur University. First pitch is scheduled to go out at 11:30 a.m. (PST).
