Ashley Kuchar set another career high after notching 28 points in a 108-78 win over New Mexico Highlands Saturday night in Whalen Gymnasium. The 108 points are the fifth most points scored in Skyhawk history.
The win marked the Skyhawks fourth straight victory and their sixth in the last seven games. Fort Lewis improves to 13-7 overall and 10-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss drops the Cowgirls to 10-11 overall and 6-11 in the league.
Kuchar was solid from the floor, hitting on 10-of-14 field goals and 4-of-6 from three point range. She also made 4-of-5 free throws, pulled down four rebounds and dished out six assists. Both senior forward
Christie Groh and
Erika Richards each netted 19 points in the game. Groh made 7-of-10 field goals and all five free throw attempts while adding seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Ten of Richards' 19 points came from the charity stripe where she netted on all 10 attempts. Sophomore forward
Mary Brinton came off the bench to record 10 points, seven rebounds and a steal.
After coming off their worst field goal shooting percentage of the season Friday night against Western New Mexico, Fort Lewis recorded a season best field goal shooting percentage, sinking 37-of-62 for 59.7 percent. They also netted 6-of-11 three-point field goals and 28-of-39 free throws.
The Skyhawks out-rebounded NMHU by nine, 46-37, and out-scored the Cowgirls in the paint, 38-24.
New Mexico Highlands was led by China Smith with 19 points. The Cowgirls shot 41.7 percent from the free throw (15-36), and 38.9 percent from the floor (28-72).
Fort Lewis will hit the road for the next four games, beginning next Friday at CSU-Pueblo and next Saturday at UC-Colorado Springs. Both games will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
