DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team combined for 20 hits and four homeruns in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at home against Colorado Christian University. The Skyhawks swept the Cougars (6-3, 7-3) to improve to 12-12 overall and 8-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
"We played two complete games today," said Fort Lewis College head coach
Kira Zeiter. "We had solid pitching, catching, defense and hitting. The weather conditions were not ideal but we kept our focus. I'm proud of the team for coming out today ready to play, and tomorrow we want to keep that same focus for the next two games."
Fort Lewis started the series with a 6-3 win. The Skyhawks trailed 1-0 entering the second inning but landed four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Missy Fundora started the scoring spree in the second with a double to left center that scored
Hayley Bolyard. The next batter,
Adriana Rosthenhausler, notched a single to score
Kaitlyn Bending. After Rosthenhausler stole second,
Chelsea Rodriguez drew a walk and
Destinee DeHerrera reached base on a throwing error that scored Rosthenhausler and Fundora for a four run inning.
Kamali'i Peneku started the top of the third inning with a home run. Bolyard, who reached base on a single, ended up crossing home plate on a passed ball to give the Skyhawks a 6-2 lead after three innings. The Cougars added one run in the top of the seventh for the final score of 6-3.
Fort Lewis tallied nine hits in the game with Rosthenhausler contributing three. Peneku added two hits, one run and one run batted in, while Bolyard went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Victoria Johnson pitched the first six and one-third innings to earn her fifth win of the season. Johnson allowed two earned runs on six hits and struck out 10 batters.
In game two, the Skyhawks came back from a three run deficit to score all seven of their runs in the fourth inning.
Myndee Thompson started the inning by reaching first base and advancing to second on an error by the left fielder. Peneku lined out before Bolyard hit a two run shot. Trailing 3-2 and two outs in the inning, Bending hit a single to the pitcher to reach first base. Fundora scored Bending after going yard to give the Skyhawks a 4-3 lead. DeHerrera capped the inning off by nailing a three-run home run that scored Rodriguez and Rosthenhausler. Fort Lewis finished the inning scoring seven runs on six hits to seal the win, 7-3.
Katie Watkins earned the win after going the distance. She allowed three runs on eight hits.
Fundora went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs batted in and one run scored. DeHerrera posted three runs and one run scored on one hit, while Bolyard added two runs batted in and one run scored on one hit.
The Skyhawks will wrap up the four game series with CCU Sunday morning. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 11 a.m.
