Box Score SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team dropped a 9-6 match at St. Leo University Thursday night, marking the Skyhawks third straight loss.
"St. Leo did a really good job of capitalizing on our mistakes," said Fort Lewis College head lacrosse coach Kelsey MacDonald. "Offensively we struggled to score in the first half and we continued that in the second half. We passed the ball well but we couldn't capitalize on opportunities. Their goalie was very good and made some great saves. We kind of got a second win, but when they won the ball they held it and we couldn't possess it."
St. Leo struck first at 24:45 but
Ally Kvidera tied the game four minutes later. SLU then scored three goals in a 12 minute span. Jam Vertner assisted
Jessica Norby with 2:39 left in the first half to cut SLU's lead to 4-2 at the half.
Norby started the second half with another goal less than three minutes into the half to bring FLC to within one goal, 4-3. That was the closest the Skyhawks would come to the Lions as they jumped to a 7-3 lead.
Norby tallied her third point of the game after assisting
Ellie Carpenter on a goal with 14:06 left in regulation. SLU took a 9-4 lead after back-to-back goals before
Marissa DiCecco and
Brook Wineland each found the back of the net before time ran out.
Norby led both teams with four points and tied for game high honors with five shots (three shots on goal). Wineland and Dicecco each contributed four shots.
Both teams registered 21 shots, while St. Leo won 22 ground balls to the Skyhawks 21.
Fort Lewis (5-4) will return home April 5-6 to play host to Regis and Colorado Mesa, respectively. Both games will begin at 1 p.m. at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
