Skyhawks Softball Splits at Colorado Mines

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team snapped their two-game losing streak after defeating Colorado School of Mines Saturday afternoon, 6-4, in game one of the doubleheader.  The Skyhawks fell in game two in eight innings, 2-1.
 
"After today's two games we feel really good about our pitchers/catcher and defense," said Fort Lewis College head coach Kira Zeiter.  "Tomorrow we want to get our bats hot again and break out and put up some big runs."
 
Kamali'i Peneku gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead in the first inning after hitting a single up the middle to score Chelsea Rodriguez.
 
Peneku went 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and two runs batted in.  Destinee DeHererra added two hits and one run scored, while Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
 
The Skyhawks took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning on four hits.  Rodriguez scored her second run of the game for a 2-0 lead after scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.  Myndee Thompson then scored FLC's third run of the game on a fielding error by the centerfielder. Mariah Stuart added the fourth run when she singled down the right field line to score Peneku.
 
The Orediggers scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to get on the scoreboard, 4-1, after an error on the Skyhawks.
 
CSM added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning before FLC added two runs in the seventh to jump to a 6-2 lead.  Thompson and Destinee DeHerrera scored both runs for the Skyhawks after a throwing error on the Orediggers added two unearned runs.
 
Victoria Johnson earned her seventh win of the season in the circle after pitching 6.2 innings.  She allowed three earned runs on six hits and fanned six batters.  Olivia Goldberg earned the save after working one-third of an inning.
 
In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, Colorado Mines took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
 
With two outs in the top of the sixth, DeHerrera singled through the left side to score Missy Fundora for the tying run.  Both teams remained scoreless in the seventh inning to lead the game into extra innings.  Morgan Anderson scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for the 2-1 win.
 
DeHerrera and Mariah Stuart recorded the only hits for the Skyhawks in game two.
 
Kiley Raica pitched 7.1 innings in the setback. Raica allowed one earned run on seven hits and struck out three batters.
 
For Lewis (17-15, 13-9 RMAC) and Colorado Mines will play games three and four of the series Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m.
