Ellie Carpenter scored two goals to help lead the Fort Lewis College lacrosse team to a 6-4 win over No. 11 Rollins College Saturday afternoon from Regis Lacrosse Field in Denver, Colo.
"We played really well today," said Fort Lewis College head women's lacrosse coach Kelsey MacDonald. "We held them to the ball, we had free possessions and we capitalized on our possessions when we needed to. On defense we shut them down. If we lost the ball on attack we came back and won it over on defense. It was an overall team win today."
The Skyhawks trailed 1-0 three minutes into the game before
Ellie Carpenter scored on a free position shot.
Brook Wineland added another goal off of Jam Vertner's assist with 16:15 left in the first half. RC tied the game at 2-2 less than a minute later, but FLC quickly answered in 19 seconds when Wineland assisted
Kylie Smith.
Abby Kvidera extended the lead to 4-2 with 12:24 left in the first half.
Fifty-eight seconds into the second half, senior
Ally Kvidera became the fifth Skyhawk to score against Rollins. Carpenter added her second free position shot with 11:50 left in regulation to give Fort Lewis their largest lead of the game, 6-2. RC added two more goals in regulation but the Skyhawks held on for a 6-4 win.
Ally Kvidera tied for game high honors with five shots in the game. Carpenter led both teams with four shots on goal. Carpenter also won three of the Skyhawks six draw controls.
Megan Longtain added a team high four ground balls.
Sophomore
Alyssa Spencer made six saves in 60 minutes between the posts.
Fort Lewis outshot Rollins, 21-17. RC edged the Skyhawks in ground balls, 14-13. The Skyhawks committed only seven fouls compared to Rollins' 23, and committed only six turnovers to RC's 10.
The Skyhawks will face Regis University tomorrow at 10 a.m. in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game. Originally scheduled for 12 p.m., a winter storm is moving in and the game will be moved to 10 a.m. FLC's enters the contest 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the RMAC. Regis is 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC.
