Johnson Pitches Skyhawks to 8-4 Win; Mavericks Go Yard in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DURANGO, Colo. – Victoria Johnson pitched six innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits to lead the Fort Lewis College softball team to an 8-4 win Saturday afternoon at Aspen Field against Colorado Mesa University.  The Mavericks hit four home runs in game two to secure a 13-3 win over Fort Lewis.
 
"Today we played a solid first game as a team," said Fort Lewis College head coach Kira Zeiter.  "Vic (Johnson) and Olivia (Goldberg) did a great job on the mound and Hayley (Bolyard) called a great game behind the plate.  We look forward to taking that good feeling into tomorrow, and not worry about game two today."
 
In game one, the Skyhawks notched a 5-1 lead after scoring five runs in the bottom of the second. Kaitlyn Bending hit a single to score Kamali'i Penku.  Missy Fundora hit a sac fly that scored Mariah Stuart before Chelsea Rodriguez hit a three-run dinger for a 5-1 lead. 
 
The Mavericks plated one run in the top of the sixth but FLC answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.  Stuart crossed home plate after Rodriguez drew a walk that loaded the bases.  Destinee DeHerrera then reached base on an error that scored Bending.  Adriana Rosthenhausler scored the Skyhawks eighth run of the game from Myndee Thompson's sacrifice fly to center field. 
 
CMU added two more runs in the seventh but the Skyhawks defense held them for an 8-4 win. 
 
Rodriguez and Bending accounted for four of the Skyhawks eight hits.  Rosthenhausler, Stuart and Bending each crossed home plate twice as Rodriguez batted in three runs.
 
In game two, Colorado Mesa hit four home runs to earn a 13-3 win over the Skyhawks.  After taking a 3-0 lead in the third inning, the Mavericks scored seven runs on nine hits (three home runs) for a 10-0 lead.  They added three more in the fifth inning.
 
Fort Lewis prevented the shutout by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Jeovanna Rios recorded her first career home run, which was a three run shot over the fence.
 
The Skyhawks were outhit in game two, 18-4.  Raica worked five innings in the circle, allowing 10 runs on 14 hits.
 
Both teams will face off Sunday morning in doubleheader action.  First pitch will go out at 11 a.m.
