Box Score 2 DURANGO, Colo. – For the second day in a row, the Fort Lewis College softball team split their doubleheader with Colorado Mesa University, winning game one, 7-6, and falling in game two, 8-5.
"The team played with a lot of heart today," said Fort Lewis College head softball coach
Kira Zeiter. "It was a great rally in the bottom of the seventh to win game one, and the team played hard all day with another strong rally in game two. Colorado Mesa was a great competition and we will mostly likely see them again in the post-season."
The Skyhawks trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Chelsea Rodriguez singled up the middle to score
Missy Fundora and
Kaitlyn Bending to tie the game, 3-3.
CMU added one run in the sixth for a 4-3 lead. With the bases loaded, Bending hit a single to score Thompson. The next batter, Fundora, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score
Kamali'i Peneku to knot the game, 5-5.
Karissa Nickeson homered in the top of the seventh to give CMU a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the seventh,
Hayley Bolyard singled to third base to score Rodriguez. With two outs and the bases loaded and Bending at the plate, Thompson scored the winning run after a wild pitch by CMU.
Victoria Johnson went the distance after allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and fanning nine batters. Bolyard went 3-for-4 with one run batted in. Thompson scored three runs on two hits while Rodriguez added two RBI's.
The Skyhawks were down 5-0 after four innings in the series finale before
Destinee DeHerrera hit a two run shot in the bottom of the fifth.
CMU plated three runs in the sixth to jump to an 8-2 lead. The Skyhawks added one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh but fell short, 8-5.
Kiley Raica allowed six earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.
Adriana Rosthenhausler led the offense with four hits on four at-bats and two runs scored. Rodriguez and DeHerrera each drove in two runs apiece.
The Skyhawks will play a non-conference double header at home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Dixie State University. They will travel to Metro State on April 12-13 for a four game series.
