FLC closes out season at Chadron State College

Fort Lewis will play their final game of the regular season on Saturday at Chadron State College.

The Eagles enter the weekend tied for fifth place in the league standings with a 4-4 RMAC record and a 5-5 overall record.

Chadron State leads the all-time series over FLC, 27-3.  The last time FLC defeated the Eagles was Oct. 1, 2005 at FLC (42-35).  The last time FLC defeated CSC on the road was the very first meeting between the two teams, 16-0, on Sept. 25, 1971.

Under center for the Eagles is Matt Vinson, who ranks sixth in the league in passing average per game (159.2) and 10th in scoring offense.  Derek Jackson is fifth in the league in rushing with 101.6 yards per game.

Defensively, the Eagles are led by Dylan Furrier who has the fourth most tackles in the league with 97.  Collin Eisenman has collected seven sacks for a loss of 36 yards, the third most in the RMAC.

Three plays over 40 yards each and three interceptions that led to 14 points helped the Fort Lewis College football team dominate Adams State University Saturday afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field, 51-10, in the annual Musket Game.

The 51 points are the most FLC has scored since 2005 when they defeated Fort Hays State University, 51-20.  The 51 points also marks the first time Fort Lewis has scored 40 or more points in a season four times.

Saturday's win improved the Skyhawks record to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the RMAC, making it the Skyhawks first winning season since 2006 (7-4 overall, 6-2 RMAC).

Sophomore running back PJ Hall entered Saturday's game with 855 rushing yards for the season.  He finished the day with 1,034 rushing yards through 10 games.  Hall carried the ball 25 times against the Grizzlies for 179 yards and one touchdown.

Hall is only the third rusher in school history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a season.  The last time a FLC running back tallied 1,000 rushing yards was in 2000 when Joe Moore ran for 1,058 yards.  Scott Stamper holds the season career rushing record with 1,206 yards, recorded in 1982.

The Springfield .45-70 military issue rifle that serves as the traveling trophy between Fort Lewis College and Adams State University was donated in 1966 to the two athletic departments by Mahlon "Butch" White. The rifle is to be retained by the winning school. Traditionally, seniors from the winning team fire the rifle at the conclusion the game.

Adams State leads the Musket series 34-15-1.  ASU leads the overall series with Fort Lewis, 37-16-1.

Senior place kicker/punter Kipp Castanha has been named the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his career.  He accounted for 15 of the Skyhawks 51 points. He made a career long 48-yard field. Castanha made all six point after touchdown attempts and all three field goal attempts (48-, 27-, and 37-yard attempts). He also averaged 60.1 yards on 10 kickoffs and punted once for 60 yards.
