DURANGO, Colo. – August 12, 2015 – One of Fort Lewis College's most prolific student-athletes joined the professional ranks this week.
Alex Herrera, who completed his eligibility with the Skyhawks this past season, has signed a professional contract to play for KTP Basket in Kotka, Finland.
"It's a tremendous feeling and an exciting step forward," said Herrera. I just want to keep getting better and better and this opportunity allows me to do that. I want to stay humble and be the best player that I can be."
The 6-foot-9 All-American center was one of a select few to play in the NABC All-Star game in 2015. He is a three- time All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-RMAC.
Herrera owns the career school records in blocks (301) and made free throws (547), and ranks second in points with 1,758 and rebounds (937). His 601 made field goals are tied for third all-time.
"We are thrilled that Alex has signed a professional basketball contract," said head coach
Bob Pietrack. "KTP Basket is getting a tremendous player and even better person. Alex's hard work and dedication showed during his career at Fort Lewis College. This is just the beginning of an amazing basketball journey for 'Chief'. We look forward to rooting for him and following his career closely."
KTP Basket finished the 2014-15 season with a 29-11 record and was led by former RMAC standout guard Brandon Jefferson (MSU Denver). The 35-game regular season schedule will begin Oct. 4, 2015, followed by the Euro Challenge.
Herrera is one of five former men's basketball student-athletes currently playing professional basketball: Kirk Archibeque, Marcus Ayala, DeAndre Lansdowne, and Nick Tomsick.
