No. 20 Men’s Basketball Opens RMAC Season at Home

UPCOMING GAMES
The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team will open the 2016-17 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season at home this weekend.  The Skyhawks will play host to Colorado State University – Pueblo on Friday, followed by Saturday's game against New Mexico Highlands University.  Both games are slated to start at 7:30 p.m. following the women's basketball games at 5:30 p.m.
 
NOTES
FLC is on a five-game winning streak after notching two neutral site wins over Diné College and Wayland Baptist University in Golden, Colo. The Skyhawks recorded a 113-33 win over Diné Friday afternoon before snapping the Pioneers six game winning streak on Saturday, 83-64.  WBU had previously defeated three RMAC teams in a row – Colorado Mesa University, Western State Colorado University and Colorado School of Mines.
 
Fort Lewis College moved up from No. 24 in last week's National Association Basketball Coaches Division II ranking to No. 20 this week.

Brandon Wilson was named this week's RMAC Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week.
 
A 6-foot-9 junior transfer from Otero Junior College, Wilson led the Skyhawks defense with 15 defensive rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals while scoring 14 points and pulling down a total of 17 rebounds.
 
Fourteen of Wilson's 15 defensive rebounds came Saturday in a win over the Pioneers, as did both of his blocked shots. In 10 minutes of action against Dine College, he totaled six points, three rebounds and a steal.
 
The Skyhawks are riding a 21-game home winning streak, extending back to the 2013-14 season.  The 21-game consecutive home winning streak is tied for the program record, set from Nov. 28, 1977 to Jan. 8, 1979.
 
FLC leads the league and are ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division II in multiple categories. FLC has the best three-point field goal percentage with 50 percent (72-of-144).  FLC is ranked No. 4 in the nation in scoring margin (28.7 points per game) and field goal percentage defense (35.4 percent), eighth in assists per game (20.5) and three-point field goals per game (12), and 10th in total three-point field goals made (72).
 
Senior guard Will Morse leads league in assist/turnover margin (5.33), assists per game (5.3), three-point field goal percentage (58.6) and total assists (32). 
 
Newcomer Daniel Hernandez is shooting at a league-best 94.1 clip from the charity stripe. He has only missed one free throw in 17 attempts.
 
SCOUTING THE THUNDERWOLVES
Colorado State-Pueblo enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record. The ThunderWolves split their games last weekend, defeating No. 7 Tarleton State University on the road, 79-78, before falling to Texas A&M-Commerce the following night, 94-91.
 
CSUP is averaging 83.6 points per game and shooting at a 51.7 percent mark through five games.
 
Six ThunderWolves are averaging at least 10 points or more.  Mark Williams leads all six with 16.6 points per game.
 
SCOUTING THE COWBOYS
New Mexico Highlands University has competed in three games during the preseason.  NMHU fell to Eastern New Mexico University and West Texas A&M University to open the season Nov. 11-12.  The Cowboys charted their first win on Nov. 18 at Western New Mexico University and have not competed since the win.
 
NMHU has committed the fewest fouls in the league this season with 52, and they lead the RMAC in steals (9.0 per game).
 
The Cowboys are led by Marlon Johnson who is averaging 2.3 blocked shots and 14.0 rebounds per game.

Fort Lewis College will travel to Colorado Mesa University Dec. 9 and Western State Colorado University Dec. 10.
