GOLDEN, Colo. – February 26, 2017 – The Fort Lewis College softball team scored 13 runs in two games at Colorado School of Mines Sunday afternoon, but the Skyhawks fell short in both games. FLC was run-ruled in game one in five innings, 15-7, and lost 11-6 in game two.
Game one ended in a walk-off inside the park home run by CSM in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two runners on base and no outs, the Orediggers Dempsey hit a home run down the right field line to run-rule the Skyhawks.
FLC started the game down five runs in the first inning but quickly tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the second.
Mandy Owens put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard on a single to left field that scored
Allison Young.
Gianna Melaragno hit a single that brought home
Kassidy Buis. With one out and bases loaded,
Angelique Elemen reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error that scored Melaragno.
Adriana Rosthenhausler scored on the same play on a fielding error. The next batter,
Tehenia Telliano, reached base and advanced to second on a fielding error that resulted in Melaragno to score and tie the game at 5-5.
The Orediggers lead grew to 9-4 in the bottom of the second inning but FLC answered with two runs in the top of the third. With one out and two runners on base, Rosthenhausler hit a double to left field that scored
Cassie Sloan and Owens.
FLC was held scoreless in the final three innings while the Orediggers plated six runs.
Four Skyhawks pitched against the Orediggers.
Olivia Goldberg suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Owens recorded a multi-hit game with two hits, one run batted in and one run scored. Rosthenhausler posted two runs batted in and one run scored.
In the opening inning of game two, Rosthenhausler started the game off with a walk and then scored second. Elemen drove Rosthenhausler home on a single up the right side for a 1-0 lead.
The Orediggers tied the game in the bottom of the first after a triple, but FLC regained the lead, 3-1 in the second inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Rosthenhausler hit a double to right center to plate
Kellsi Peterson and
Allison Young.
For the second straight inning, CSM tied the game again at 3-3.
Elemen started the third inning off with her fourth home run of the season. Buis brought in the Skyhawks fifth run in three innings when she singled to score Young.
A home run by the Orediggers in the bottom of the third cut into the Skyhawks lead, 5-4.
FLC was held scoreless in the fourth inning and lost the lead when Colorado Mines scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-5 lead.
Fort Lewis' final run of the game came in the fifth inning on Young's single than brought home
Kaitlyn Barlow.
CSM finished the game with four unanswered runs to earn the win, 11-6.
Madison Stanich pitched the first four innings, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and fanning three batters.
Elemen,
Lauren Caldwell and
Tristen Gilbert each tallied two hits while Rosthenhausler and Elemen scored two runs each.
Fort Lewis moves to 1-10 on the season and 0-2 in RMAC games.
Games three and four of the two-day doubleheader will start Monday morning at 10 a.m.
