AZTEC, N.M. – March 19, 2017 – For the second straight day, the Fort Lewis College softball team split a doubleheader against Regis University. The Skyhawks lost Sunday's opener, 8-3, but came back to win the series finale, 5-3.
The four game series split is the first of the season for the Skyhawks as they move to 3-22 on the season and 2-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Regis stays even in league play with an 8-8 RMAC record, and a 16-16 overall record.
Madison Stanich pitched a complete game to earn her second win of the season in the circle. Stanich fanned five batters and surrendered six hits.
Both teams were held scoreless in game two until the third inning when FLC plated three runs. With two runners on base and two outs,
Gianna Melaragno singled to left field to score
Robyn Hall who was pinch running for
Mandy Owens.
Angelique Elemen followed with a single to plate
Cassie Sloan, followed by
Lauren Caldwell's double to drive home Melaragno for the third run of the inning.
Regis responded in the fourth inning with two runs on two hits.
FLC went three-and-out in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, the Rangers had the bases loaded with two outs before Stanich struck out RU's batter for the third out of the inning. The Rangers knotted the game in the sixth inning, 3-3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Owens singled up the middle to reach base. With two outs, Adrianna Rosthenhausler doubled to right center field to score Owens for a 4-3 lead.
Allison Young added an insurance run when she singled to bring home Rsothenhasuler for the final run of the game, 5-3.
Rosthenhasuler went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one run batted in. Young added two hits and the Skyhawks finished with 10 hits.
In Sunday's opening game, FLC trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. FLC was held hitless through the first three innings before Rosthenhausler reached base on a walk. The next batter, Young, hit an infield single that resulted in a Rangers error which eventually allowed Rosthenhausler to score. Caldwell's single drove home Young to cut into the Rangers lead, 4-2.
Regis would add three more runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth inning. The Skyhawks last run of the game came in the seventh when Owens hit her third homerun of the season.
The Skyhawks scored three runs on three hits.
Olivia Bratt pitched the first 3.2 innings in the circle, surrendering four earned runs on four hits.
After eight straight home games, the Skyhawks will travel to Adams State University March 25-26 for a four game series.
