No. 22 Mavericks Take Two from Skyhawks

AZTEC, N.M. – April 1, 2017 – The 22nd ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won both games Saturday afternoon against the Fort Lewis College softball team at the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex in Aztec, N.M.  FLC lost game one, 5-2, and game two, 15-3 (five innings).
 
The first run of the day came in the third inning for CMU.  The Mavericks added two more runs in the fourth inning from a two-run homerun shot. 
 
FLC plated two runs in the fourth inning.  Robyn Hall entered the game as a pinch runner for Tristen Gilbert who reached base on a double.  Lauren Caldwell hit a double to center field to score Hall and Angelique Elemen.
 
The Mavericks added two more runs in the fifth inning for a 5-2 lead they would not lose.
 
Olivia Goldberg went the distance in the circle to open the four game series.  Goldberg allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and struck out one batter.
 
Six different Skyhawks recorded a hit in game one.
 
Game two started with seven runs in the first inning between the two teams.  CMU opened with four runs on four hits before the Skyhawks added three runs.  Elemen blasted her seventh homerun of the season to drive home Allison Young and Adriana Rosthenhausler
 
FLC was held scoreless the remainder of the game while the Mavericks notched 11 unanswered runs.
 
Rosthenhausler accounted for two of the Skyhawks four hits in game two.  She led FLC with three hits on the day.
 
Madison Stanich suffered the loss in the circle, pitching 4.1 innings and surrendering 10 runs on 12 hits.
 
The Mavericks were led by Brooke Hodgson who went 4-for-7 at the plate with five runs scored and seven runs batted in.  Three of her four hits were homerun shots that scored six runs.
 
Fort Lewis (4-27, 3-19) and the Mavericks (26-4, 19-2) will face each other Sunday morning.  Doubleheader action starts at 11 a.m.
