Softball Nearly Upsets No. 22 Mavericks

AZTEC, N.M. – April 2, 2017 – The Fort Lewis College softball team was two runs shy of upsetting the No. 22 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks Sunday afternoon at Aztec Tiger Sports Complex.  The Skyhawks (4-29, 3-21 RMAC) took the Mavericks (28-4, 21-2 RMAC) to extra innings but fell short, 9-8, in the series finale of the four game. 
 
CMU completed the weekend sweep and extended their winning streak to 20 games after earning a 17-1, five inning win in Sunday's doubleheader opener.
 
In the series finale, the Skyhawks tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning when Adriana Rosthenhausler reached base on an error that scored Mandy Owens.
 
CMU added six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-1 lead.  The Skyhawks responded with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 7-7.  Rosthenhausler started the scoring spree with a single down the left field line to score Tehenia Telliano.  The next batter, Allison Young, singled up the middle that brought home Kellsi PetersonGianna Melaragno's double to center field scored Rosthenhausler.  Angelique Elemen plated Melaragno, Young and herself on a three-run home run for the sixth run of the inning.
 
Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.  In the top of the ninth inning with the bases loaded, CMU hit a single to score two runs. 
 
Down 9-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Tristen Gilbert doubled to left center that scored Melaragno to bring the Skyhawks within one run of tying the Mavericks, but the next three Skyhawks struck out swinging to close the game, 9-8.
 
Melaragno and Peterson each posted three hits as FLC finished the game with 15 hits.  Melaragno added two runs and one run batted in. 
 
Madison Stanich pitched 4.2 innings and surrendered one unearned run on two hits and fanned two batters.
 
The Skyhawks only run in Sunday's first game came in the fifth inning.  Owens hit a single to left field to score Kaitlyn Barlow who was pinch running for Gilbert.
 
Six of the Mavericks runs were scored off of two homeruns as CMU tallied 12 hits off the Skyhawks.
 
Fort Lewis College will travel to New Mexico Highlands University, April 8-9, in Las Vegas, N.M.
