LAS VEGAS, N.M. – April 8, 2017 – Eight of the Fort Lewis College softball team's 16 runs Saturday afternoon came off of four homeruns as the Skyhawks defeated New Mexico Highlands University, 16-6, in six innings. The 10-run win is the largest margin of victory for the Skyhawks this season.
Fort Lewis split with the Cowgirls on Saturday. FLC dropped the first game of the day, 13-4 (five innings).
The Skyhawks wore purple warmup shirts and red ribbons in memory of the Cowgirls catcher, Danielle Cordova.
Tied at 3-3 heading into the fourth inning, the Skyhawks hit three dingers as part of their seven runs in the inning. Giana Melaragno hit her second homerun of the season to plate three runs. The next two batters,
Angelique Elemen and
Lauren Caldwell, each followed with homeruns of their own.
Tehenia Telliano capped the homerun derby in the fifth inning with a three run shot to boost the Skyhawks lead to 13-6.
The Skyhawks defense and pitching staff allowed only one hit in four of the six innings.
Elemen finished the game going 4-for-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.
Allison Young went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a run batted in. Melaragno added three runs scored and three runs batted in off of two hits. Telliano scored two runs and drove in three runs. FLC finished with 16 runs on 16 hits.
Madison Stanich earned the win in the circle after pitching the first 3.1 innings and allowing five earned runs on five hits.
Olivia Goldberg closed out the game holding the Cowgirls to only two hits and no runs.
The Skyhawks scored three of their four runs in the third inning of the series opener. With the bases loaded, Adrianna Rosthenhausler and
Kellsi Peterson scored unearned runs on a throwing error. Elemen's single to center field scored Melaragno for the third run of the inning, cutting into the Cowgirls 4-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning and trailing 8-3, Rosthenhasuler hit a sacrifice fly to score Peterson who was on third base after hitting a triple. NMHU sealed the win in the bottom of the fifth after scoring five runs.
Six Skyhawks recorded seven hits for FLC. Elemen led the team with two hits. NMHU posted 17 hits off of the Skyhawks.
Sunday's doubleheader will start at 11 a.m.
