LAS VEGAS, N.M. – April 9, 2017 – The Fort Lewis College softball team accounted for 18 hits Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader at New Mexico Highlands University, but the Skyhawks fell short in both games, 7-6 (eight innings) and 14-6 (five innings). FLC closes the weekend out winning one of four games as they move to 5-32 overall and 4-24 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. NMHU improves to 15-26 on the season and 13-16 in league games.
In Sunday's opening game, the Skyhawks took a 4-0 lead after the first two innings.
Angelique Elemen hit a two-run homerun in the first inning that scored
Kellsi Peterson.
Tristen Gilbert followed with a single homerun for the third run of the inning.
Gianna Melaragno gave FLC a 4-0 lead in the second inning after hitting her third homerun of the season.
The Cowgirls responded with three runs in the third inning, the game-tying run in the fourth inning and a 5-4 lead over FLC in the fifth inning.
Kaitlyn Barlow singled in the seventh inning with two outs to score
Lauren Caldwell for the game-tying run to send it into extra innings.
Kellsi Peterson led off the eighth inning with her first career homerun to give FLC a 6-5 lead. NMHU doubled to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 7-6 decision.
FLC tallied four homeruns in the game, marking the second straight game and the third game this season with four homeruns in a game.
Elemen went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Peterson added two runs scored and a run batted in off of one hit.

Kelly Decker totaled six strikeouts and held NMHU to four earned runs and 11 hits.
In the series finale, the Cowgirls jumped to a 10-0 lead after two innings. FLC plated four runs in the third inning to cut the deficit down to six runs.
Tristen Gilbert hit her second homerun of the series in the fourth inning to score Elemen. FLC was held scores in the fifth inning as NMHU added four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to seal their third win of the series.
Gilbert led FLC's offense with two runs scored and two runs batted in on one hit. Elemen recorded one of the Skyhawks four hits in the game as she crossed home plate twice and added a run batted in.
Fort Lewis will return home to Aztec Tiger Sports Complex April 14-15 for a four game series against University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
