Football Hosts Western This Saturday for Senior Day

DURANGO, Colo. – It will be Senior Day this Saturday for the Fort Lewis College football team when they host Western Colorado University starting at noon at Ray Dennison Field.

FLC (1-6, 1-6 RMAC) is coming off a tough matchup with #9 Colorado School of Mines, as the Skyhawks held a 7-2 lead in the first quarter. Ta'Jon Monday-Smith came in to run the wildcat offense and tossed a 35-yard touchdown strike to Xavier Thibodeaux to help boost the Skyhawks to the lead. He also led the team in rushing with seven attempts for 37 yards, with a long of 21 yards. Erik Ornduff also spent some time at quarterback, completing a TD pass to Arealous Hughes in the fourth quarter.

With it being Senior Day this Saturday, below is information on each of the seniors.

Mason Hatton is from Phoenix, Ariz., and has spent his entire career with the Skyhawks at wide receiver. For his career, he has played in 33 games, catching 79 passes for 780 yards and four touchdowns. He also has 20 punt returns for 118 yards. This year he caught a season-high eight passes (twice), had 87 receiving yards against Adams State and caught two touchdowns passes against Chadron State. He was named RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week in 2016.

Donell Pleasant III is from San Diego, Calif., and transferred to Fort Lewis after playing at both Howard University and Southwestern College as a defensive back. He's played in 16 games as a Skyhawk tallying 104 tackles, six interceptions, 5.5 tackles for loss, 11 passes defended and two forced fumbles. This season he posted 14 tackles against Chadron State and had an interception against Black Hills State and Colorado Mesa. He was named to the All-RMAC First Team last season, returning a pair of interceptions for touchdowns.

Dre Cortez from Dallas, Texas and has played his entire career at Fort Lewis. The defensive back has played in 30 games, recording 117 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, five interceptions and 19 passes defended. This season he collected 10 tackles against Chadron State, had an interception against New Mexico Highlands and blocked a kick against Dixie State. Last year he earned All-RMAC Second Team and All-RMAC honor roll accolades and in 2016, he was named to the All-RMAC Honorable Mention Team and All-RMAC honor roll.

Ta'Jon Mondy-Smith is from San Diego, Calif., and transferred to Fort Lewis from Southwestern College. The wide receiver has played in 14 games for the Skyhawks, catching 26 passes for 393 yards and seven touchdowns. This season he caught five passes twice, went for 165 yards against New Mexico Highlands and scored a pair of touchdowns on two occasions. In addition, he also completed 3-5 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown and has rushed seven times for 37 yards.

Nick McNamee is from Littleton, Colo., and has spent his entire career with the Skyhawks. The quarterback has played in 10 games passing for 1,141 yards and 11 touchdowns. This season he completed 27 passes at Adams State, threw for 277 yards against Colorado Mesa and had four touchdowns against Adams State. He has one of the top completion percentage in the conference at over 57 percent.

Kevin Gaines II is from San Diego, Calif., and transferred to Fort Lewis from Southwestern College. The linebacker has played in 16 games with the Skyhawks, collecting eight tackles, five solo, along with a pass defended. He's played in every game this season, recording three tackles against Black Hills State, along with a pass defended.

Cam Thierry is from Pflugerville, Texas and has spent his entire career at Fort Lewis. The defensive back has played in 30 games coming away with 58 tackles, a half-sack, an interception and 14 passes defended. He tallied a season-high six tackles twice, had two passes defended against Adams State and grabbed an interception that he returned 60 yards for a touchdown against the Grizzlies.

Justin Reed is from Richmond, Texas and has spent his entire career at Fort Lewis. The linebacker missed this season due to injury after playing in 14 games during his career for the Skyhawks, recording nine tackles,  three in a game against Colorado Mesa last year. He played in 10 games last year.

Isiah Mayberry is a local product from right here in Durango and he spent his entire career with the Skyhawks. The linebacker has played in 39 games accumulating 103 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, an interception, five passes defended, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. This season he went for a season-high 10 tackles (twice), had three tackles for loss against Dixie State, a sack against Black Hills State and two forced fumbles against Black Hills State. Mayberry was named to the All-RMAC Second Team last year.

Christopher Blanton is from Downey, Calif., and transferred to Fort Lewis from East Los Angeles College. The defensive lineman has played in 18 games as a Skyhawk posting 52 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. This season he had a season-high five tackles happen on three different occasions, three tackles for loss against Chadron State, a sack in two different games and two quarterback hurries versus Black Hills State. Blanton was named to the All-RMAC Second Team last season.

Kyle Mudick is from Aurora, Colo., and transferred to Fort Lewis after playing at Chadron State. He's played in seven games along the offensive line this season helping the offense to 2,215 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Josh Howell is from Culver City, Calif., and transferred to Fort Lewis from Golden West College and Orange Coast College. The current offensive lineman also played along the defensive line last year posting three tackles. He's played in 12 games for the Skyhawks, helping the offense this season tally 2,215 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Jeffrey Brinkley is from Livermore, Calif., and transferred to Fort Lewis from Laney College. The offensive lineman has played in 17 games for the Skyhawks as he was named to the All-RMAC Honorable Mention Team last year in helping the offense pile up 3,340 yards. This season he has helped the offense tally 2,215 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Marcelino Carrillo is from Los Angeles, Calif., and transferred to Fort Lewis after playing at Mt. San Jacinto College. The offensive lineman has logged 14 games in a Skyhawk uniform and has been part of an offense that has tallied 5,555 yards over the past two seasons.

Joshua Cuellar is from Houston, Texas and transferred to Fort Lewis from Blinn College. The defensive lineman has played in 23 games as a Skyhawk posting 55 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, a blocked kick and a pass defended. This season he went for a season-high nine tackles against Colorado Mesa, recorded a sack against Chadron State and blocked a kick versus Black Hills State.

Frank Larriva is from Santa Ana, Calif., and transferred to Fort Lewis from Golden West College. The defensive lineman has played in 11 games as a Skyhawk posting 37 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, a pass defended, a fumble recovery and two forced fumbles. This season he recorded a season-high five tackles against Colorado Mesa and also had a sack in that same game. Last year he earned All-RMAC Academic honor roll accolades.

On the season, FLC averages 24 points and allows 35. The Skyhawks have rushed for 674 yards and passed for 1,541 yards, totaling 18 touchdowns. Opponents have totaled 2,065 yards and 21 scores.

Nick McNamee has completed 93-161 for 946 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's completing 57 percent of his passes. On the ground, Brayden Lucero leads the way carrying the ball 108 times for 467 yards and a touchdown. Mason Hatton leads the receivers with 42 catches for 389 yards and three touchdowns. Mondy-Smith adds 17 catches for 321 yards and five touchdowns. Parker Strahler and Hughes add two touchdowns each.

On defense, Isiah Mayberry leads the team with 54 tackles, 25 coming solo. He also has nine tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries, two passes defended, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Donell Pleasant III adds 50 tackles, with 35 solo, he also has 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and a forced fumble. Suli Tukumoeatu is tied with Pleasant III with a pair of interceptions, he also has 42 tackles and seven passes defended, along with two fumble recoveries. Dre Cortez is third on the team in tackles with 45 and adds an interception and four passes defended. Lorenzo Tanner leads the team in sacks with three, while Christopher Blanton and Blayke De La Rosa add 2.5 sacks apiece.

The Skyhawks rank high in several RMAC and national categories including fifth in the RMAC and 72nd nationally in fewest penalty yards per game (64.57), tied for first in the RMAC and tied for fifth nationally in fumbles lost (2), fourth in the RMAC and 46th nationally in fumbles recovered (6), fourth in the RMAC and 43rd nationally in net punting (36.25), fourth in the RMAC and 60th nationally in passes intercepted (7), third in the RMAC and 77th nationally in rushing defense (147.6), sixth in the RMAC in scoring defense (34.9), sixth in the RMAC and 68th nationally in teams sacks (2.14), fourth in the RMAC and 46th nationally in team tackles for loss (7.3), sixth in the RMAC in total defense (442.6), fifth in the RMAC and 58th nationally in turnovers gained (13).

Individually, Javonte Norman is seventh in the RMAC in combined kick return yards (257), Ethan Williams is 10th in the same category (222). McNamee is fifth in the RMAC and 67th nationally in completion percentage (.578), fifth in the RMAC and 88th nationally in completions per game (13.29), eighth in the RMAC and 97th nationally in passing efficiency (115.2), sixth in the RMAC and 68th nationally in passing touchdowns (10), ninth in the RMAC in passing yards (946), ninth in the RMAC in passing yards per game (135.1), 10th in the RMAC in passing yards per completion (10.17) and 10th in the RMAC in total offense per game (129.1). Mayberry is tied for second in the RMAC and tied for 40th nationally in forced fumbles (0.29), tied for seventh in the RMAC and tied for 81st nationally in fumbles recovered (1), sixth in the RMAC and 73rd nationally in tackles for loss per game (1.3). Tukumoeatu is tied for second in the RMAC and tied for sixth nationally in fumbles recovered (2), sixth in the RMAC and 48th nationally in passes defended (1.3) and is tied with Donell Pleasant III for sixth in the RMAC and 94th nationally in interceptions per game (0.3).  Trevor David, Mayberry and Tim Paogofie are all tied for seventh in the RMAC and 81st nationally in fumbles recovered with one. Williams is seventh in the RMAC and 71st nationally in kickoff return yards per game (22.2), while Norman is ninth in the RMAC and 103rd nationally in the same category (19.8). Max Peets is third in the RMAC and sixth nationally in punting average (44.6), Mondy-Smith is fifth in the RMAC and 53rd nationally in receiving touchdowns (5), Hatton is ninth in the RMAC in receiving yards (389) and sixth in the RMAC and 29th nationally in receptions per game (6.0). Lucero is 10th in the RMAC and 80th nationally in rushing yards (467) and ninth in the RMAC and 92nd nationally in rushing yards per game (66.7). Pleasant III is third in the RMAC and 22nd nationally in solo tackles (5.8) and is 10th in the RMAC and 82nd nationally in total tackles (8.3). George Marpaung is fourth in the RMAC and 57th nationally in tackles for loss per game (1.4) and Mayberry is sixth in the RMAC and 73rd nationally in the same category at 1.3.

Last year against Western Colorado University the Skyhawks pulled out a 14-13 win in Gunnison. FLC came back from a 13-0 deficit scoring a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to claim the victory. Bo Coleman had a 10-yard TD run and then found AJ Shaw for a seven-yard TD pass with 1:26 left to lift the Skyhawks to the win. Darrian Stickney had seven tackles, posting a tackle for loss, a half-sack and an interception.

The last meeting between the teams in Durango in 2016 also was a close battle with Western taking the 13-6 victory.

This season, Western is 0-7 overall and 0-6 in RMAC play. They've come close in a number of games this season falling by four, 24-20, to Colorado Mesa, losing 55-52 in overtime to Adams State and this past weekend they nearly pulled out a win at Dixie State before coming up just short, 17-10.

As a team, the Mountaineers average 21 points and allow 37 points, tallying 2,183 yards of total offense and 20 touchdowns, while allowing 3,148 yards and 30 total touchdowns. Western has used six quarterbacks throughout the season with Dylan Jacob playing in all seven games. He has completed 78-153 for 830 yards and six touchdowns. Cameron Shumway has completed 36-68 for 285 yards with four touchdowns. Isaac Fuqua leads the rushing attack carrying 104 times for 600 yards and seven touchdowns. Shumway has rushed 48 times for 140 yards. Jordan Barton has 16 catches for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Manchester is right behind with 20 catches for 227 yards and a score. Elijah Gillespi leads the team with three receiving touchdowns. On defense, Lane Farris leads the way with 58 tackles, tallying 35 solo. He also has 3.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss and three passes defended and two forced fumbles. Desmond Marfizo adds 50 tackles. Mark Zavala leads the team in sacks with six and the team only has two interceptions this season with Dominick Fletch and Tim Mullin coming away with the interceptions.

Around the RMAC from this past weekend had South Dakota Mines win a shootout at home against Adams State, 56-42, Dixie State held on at home against Western, 17-10, CSU-Pueblo won on the road at Colorado Mesa, 36-14 and Black Hills State rolled at home to their first win of the season against New Mexico Highlands, 42-7.

Updated standings have Colorado School of Mines still as the only undefeated team in the conference at 7-0, CSU-Pueblo and Dixie State are tied for second at 5-1, Chadron State is fourth at 4-2, Adams State is fifth at 4-3, Colorado Mesa and South Dakota Mines are tied for sixth at 3-3, New Mexico Highlands is eighth at 2-4, Black Hills State and Fort Lewis are tied for ninth at 1-6 and Western is 11th at 0-6.

This week's games have a pair of games kicking off at noon in Western at Fort Lewis and Dixie State at Chadron State. South Dakota Mines visits New Mexico Highlands (1 p.m.), CSU-Pueblo is at Adams State (1 p.m.), Colorado Mesa is at Black Hills State (1 p.m.) and Azusa Pacific is at Colorado School of Mines (1 p.m.).
