DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis College football kicker Lucas Schmitten has been named to the Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award midseason watch list, the organization announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fred Mitchell Award recognizes 40 outstanding collegiate placekickers for their performances throughout the first half of the 2026 football season. The award recognizes not only field goal accuracy, distance, and performances in critical moments, but also the positive impact student-athletes make beyond the football field. The recipient of the 2026 Fred Mitchell Award will be announced in December based on accomplishments on the football field and contributions to the community.

Schmitten, a junior out of ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo., has ranked among the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's (RMAC) best thus far and is one of 10 kickers from Division II on the midseason watch list.

Through five games, Schmitten is 11-for-14 overall, a perfect 6-for-6 from inside 39 yards, and leads the RMAC with an average of 2.2 made field goals per game. He also boasts the two longest made field goals in the conference, both from 51 yards, is one of two in the league to make 10+ field goals thus far, and boasts the second-highest field goal percentage (78.6 percent) among kickers with 10+ attempts. Schmitten is also 8-for-8 on point-after attempts, leads Fort Lewis with 41 of the team's 97 points this year, and sits T-6 in the RMAC in total scoring.

Fort Lewis returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 17, as the Skyhawks head for Gunnison, Colo., and Mojo Field at Mountaineer Bowl at The Rady Family Sports Complex to face No. 6/6-ranked Western Colorado University (6-0, 4-0 RMAC) at 6 p.m.
