DURANGO, Colo. – After a thrilling back-and-forth Musket Game this past Saturday against Adams State, the Fort Lewis College football team will now return home to play in Ray Dennison Memorial Field this Saturday against Colorado Mesa for Homecoming with a noon kickoff.
FLC (1-4, 1-4 RMAC) refused to go away in Alamosa, erasing an early 21-3 deficit and even took a late lead in the fourth quarter before the teams ended up going to overtime and Adams State took the 48-42 victory.
Beau McCannon kicked his way to RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week as his 49-yard field goal with just a second remaining in the game sent the Musket Game to overtime. He also added a 33-yard field goal, four extra points and three touchbacks on kickoffs. It was the first two collegiate career field goals for the freshman.
This will be the third home game of the season, but second at Ray Dennison after FLC opened the year at Durango High School against New Mexico Highlands. The offense is averaging 26 points per game and allowing 32 points per contest. FLC has gained 1,722 yards and allowed 2,195. The defense has forced 10 turnovers this year.
Nick McNamee has completed 66-109 for a 60.55 percentage for 657 yards and seven touchdowns. He has a long completion of 39 yards. Brayden Lucero has rushed for 402 yards on 85 carries with a touchdown and a long carry of 49 yards. Jake Lowry remains second on the team with 166 yards on 33 carries and two scores. Mason Hatton has caught 33 passes for 33 yards and three touchdowns. Ta'Jon Monday-Smith adds 11 receptions for 236 yards and three touchdowns as well. Parker Strahler with 160 yards and Arealous Hughes is also over 100 yards at 116.
On defense, Donell Pleasant III has 44 tackles, with 29 solo, along with 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception, a forced fumble and a pass broken up. Isiah Mayberry and Dre Cortez are over 30 tackles with Mayberry at 36 and Cortez at 35. Mayberry leads the team with seven tackles for loss, Blayke De La Rosa has 2.5 sacks and both Suli Tukumoeatu and Nathan Aguilar have interceptions returned for touchdowns. Mayberry has forced two fumbles on strip-sacks and both Tukumoeatu and Cam Thierry have five passes defended each.
FLC ranks in the top-five in the RMAC and high in several national categories including fifth in the RMAC and 31st nationally in blocked kicks (2), first in the nation in defensive touchdowns (4), first in the RMAC and 12th nationally in fumbles lost (2), fourth in the RMAC and 30th nationally in fumbles recovered (5), first in the RMAC and 19th nationally in net punting (38.55), fourth in the RMAC and 60th nationally in passes intercepted (5), fifth in the RMAC and 72nd nationally in punt return defense allowed per return (7.50), third in the RMAC and 73rd nationally in rushing defense (142.8), fifth in the RMAC in scoring defense (33.8), fifth in the RMAC and 49th nationally in team tackles for loss (7.4), fourth in the RMAC and 61st nationally in time of possession (30:50), fifth in total defense (439), fourth in the RMAC and 49th nationally in turnovers gained (10).
Individually, Javonte Norman is fifth in the RMAC in combined kick return yards (227), Ethan Williams is sixth in the RMAC in the same category (222). Williams is ninth in the RMAC and 75th nationally in kickoff return average (22.2), while Norman is 11th in the RMAC in that same category (20.6). McNamee is fourth in the RMAC and 49th nationally in completion percentage (60), seventh in the RMAC in completions per game (13.20), ninth in the RMAC in passing efficiency (121.4), seventh in the RMAC and 68th nationally in passing touchdowns (7), ninth in the RMAC in passing yards (657), ninth in the RMAC in passing yards per game (131.4) and 10th in the RMAC in three other categories including points responsible for (44), points responsible for per game (8.8) and in total offense (126.6). Lowry remains fourth in the RMAC and 29th nationally in passing yards per completion (14.61). Hogan Keasler is sixth in the RMAC and 79th nationally in field goal percentage (50) and ninth in the RMAC in field goals per game (.50). Mayberry is tied for second in the RMAC and 15th nationally in forced fumbles per game (.40) and tied for fifth in the RMAC and 44th nationally in fumbles recovered (1). Tukumoeatu is tied for first in the RMAC and third nationally in fumbles recovered (2), while Tim Paogofie and Jaelon Wright are tied with Mayberry with a fumble recovered each. Max Peets remains one of the top punters in the game as he is first in the RMAC and fifth nationally in punting average (45.3). Hatton is tied with Mondy-Smith as both players are seventh in the RMAC and 76th nationally in receiving touchdowns (3), Hatton is fourth in the RMAC and 20th nationally in receptions per game (6.6) and eighth in the RMAC in both receiving yards (331) and receiving yards per game (66.2). Monday-Smith is third in the RMAC and 25th nationally in yards per reception (21.45). Lucero is sixth in the RMAC and 52nd nationally in rushing yards (402) and sixth in the RMAC and 63rd nationally in rushing yards per game (80.4). Pleasant III is third in the RMAC and 28th nationally in solo tackles per game (5.8) and seventh in the RMAC and 71st nationally in total tackles per game (8.8). Mayberry, Christopher Blanton and George Marpaung are all in the top-10 in the RMAC in tackles for loss with Mayberry leading the way at 1.4 per game, fourth in the RMAC and 68th nationally, Blanton is sixth in the RMAC and 99th nationally at 1.3 and Marpaung is eighth in the RMAC.
Colorado Mesa (3-2, 2-2 RMAC) won last year's meeting in Grand Junction 40-14. Bo Coleman passed for 132 yards, completing 16-23. TJ Telphy rushed for 137 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown. Lowry also rushed for a touchdown on 34 yards and two carries. Hughes caught three passes for 54 yards and Hatton added eight catches for 52 yards. On defense, Darrian Stickney led the way with 10 tackles. Brody McGhehey added nine stops. Pleasant had two tackles for loss.
The last meeting in Durango was a close one in 2016 with the Mavericks taking the 34-28 victory. Fort Lewis held a 28-17 lead in the fourth quarter when Colorado Mesa rallied for three touchdowns to get the come-from-behind win. Current Skyhawk Hughes caught five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Current FLC assistant coach Shane Nelson led the team in tackles with 12. The 2015 matchup in Durango was a close contest as well with Colorado Mesa taking the 21-13 victory. The Mavericks have won the last three meetings in the series with Fort Lewis winning back in 2014 in Grand Junction, 28-20.
Colorado Mesa was ranked throughout the top-25 up until this past weekend. They started the season with three straight wins against South Dakota Mines (36-33), Eastern New Mexico (34-21) and Western State (24-20). They fell in a close home contest to Chadron State (34-38) and then lost this past weekend to #14 Colorado School of Mines (31-72).
The Mavericks average nearly 32 points a game and allow just under 37 points. They have tallied 2,309 yards of offense and allowed 2,600 yards. Their defense has forced seven turnovers. Eystin Salum has completed 76-153 for 1,159 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He has a long completion of 75 yards. Salum has rushed for 379 yards on 81 carries and three touchdowns to lead the team. Pailate Makakona leads the team in rushing scores with four, while tallying 339 yards on 79 carries. Peter Anderson has 29 receptions for 641 yards and six touchdowns. Three other receivers also have over 100 yards in Corbin Covey (177), Marcus Hines (145) and KJ Sapp (140). On defense, Tom Saager has 45 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Marco Garcia adds 38 tackles and D'Angelo Lindsey with 35. Chance Drake has .45 tackles for loss, with four being sacks. Antonio Clark has two interceptions.
Around the RMAC has Colorado School of Mines leading the way with a perfect 5-0 overall and RMAC record. Chadron State and Dixie State are tied for second with 4-1 records. CSU-Pueblo sits in fourth at 3-1, Adams State, winners of three straight, are in fifth at 3-2, Colorado Mesa and New Mexico Highlands are tied for sixth at 2-2, South Dakota Mines sits eighth at 1-3, Fort Lewis is ninth at 1-4, Western State is 10th at 0-4 and Black Hills State sits 11th at 0-5.
Results from this past Saturday saw Colorado School of Mines win at home 72-31 against Colorado Mesa, Chadron State collecting a 40-22 home win against Western State, Adams State with an overtime home win against Fort Lewis, 48-42, CSU-Pueblo also taking a home win 41-14 against South Dakota Mines and Dixie State was the only team to win on the road pulling out a 41-38 win at Black Hills State. New Mexico Highlands played out of conference going against Lone Star Conference for Texas A&M-Kingsville in Texas and the Javelinas held on to beat the Cowboys, 33-30.
This Saturday, everyone will play a conference game except for Dixie State as they will play in Michigan against Grand Valley State (7 p.m. ET). Colorado Mesa is at Fort Lewis (12 p.m.), Chadron State at Adams State (1 p.m.), Colorado School of Mines at Western State (1 p.m.), New Mexico Highlands at CSU-Pueblo (6 p.m.) and Black Hills State at South Dakota Mines (6 p.m.).
