Men’s Soccer Returns Home to Face Regis, UCCS

DURANGO, Colo. – After a trip to Utah, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team will be glad to be back home at Dirks Field this weekend where they hold a 3-0-1 mark. The Skyhawks will host Regis on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and then against UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday starting at 2:30 p.m.

FLC (5-2-2, 3-2-1 RMAC) came close last time out, going right down to the wire against Westminster before the Griffins held on for the 1-0 victory. Each team had four shots on goal in the game, with Westminster's Alec Marshall tallying the only goal in the 65th minute.

The game before, FLC outshot Dixie State 8-5, but the Trailblazers tallied the 4-1 victory. Ty Lang scored in the 51st minute in that game.

On the season, the Skyhawks have 22 goals and have allowed 13. They've posted 166 shots to 94 for opponents, with 83 on goal to 39 for the opposition. Bar Hazut leads the team with 13 points, scoring five goals with three assists. Ryan Lee also has five goals with an assist for 11 points. Lang is also in double-figures with 10 points, scoring four goals and adding two assists. Marshall Metzger and Hakeem Rabiu also have two goals apiece this season.

Lang has logged the most time this season at 832, followed by Metzger with 811 and Ventura Salcido at 808. In net, Salcido has started all nine games this season and holds a 1.37 goals against average and has made 24 saves this year.

FLC ranks in the top-five in the RMAC and high in several national categories including first in the RMAC and 17th nationally in assists per game (2.30), first in the RMAC and 68th nationally in corner kicks per game (5.30), third in the RMAC and 35th nationally in points per game (6.70), fourth in the RMAC and 45th nationally in scoring offense per game (2.20), second in the RMAC and 28th nationally in shots per game (16.70), second in the RMAC and 17th nationally in shots on goal per game (8.40), fourth in the RMAC and 74th nationally in shutout percentage (.300), fifth in the RMAC and 75th nationally in team goals against average (1.303), first in the RMAC and 15th nationally in total assists (23), fourth in the RMAC and 31st nationally in total goals (22), fourth in the RMAC and 21st nationally in total points (67), fourth in the RMAC and 62nd nationally in win-loss percentage (.650).

Individually, Steen Shober is seventh in the RMAC in assists per game (0.33), Max Fuentes Carrera, Bar Hazut, Nicolas Perez and Rabiu are all tied for eighth with a 0.30 value. Lee is second in the RMAC and 44th nationally in game-winning goals (2), Landon Gibson, Hazut and Lang are all tied for ninth with one game-winning goal. Salcido is third in the RMAC and 26th nationally in goalie minutes played, seventh in the RMAC and 79th nationally in goals against average and second in the RMAC and 32nd nationally in shutouts (3). Hazut and Lee are tied for seventh in the RMAC in goals per game (0.50) and both are in the top-10 in the conference in points per game with Hazut fifth at 1.30 and Lee is ninth at 1.10. Hazut is seventh in the RMAC in shots per game (2.90) and tied for fifth in the RMAC with Rabiu in shots on goal per game (1.40). Fuentes Carrera, Hazut, Perez, Rabiu and Shober are all tied for sixth in the RMAC in total assists (3). Hazut and Lee are tied for fourth in the RMAC and 73rd nationally in total goals (5), while Lang is 10th in the RMAC with four. Hazut is sixth in the RMAC and 71st nationally in total points (13), while Lee is eighth in the RMAC with 11. Salcido is eighth in the RMAC in total saves with 27.

First up will be a matchup with Regis. FLC and Regis faced each other twice in the span of a week last year during the regular season, with the Skyhawks winning both games. They won the first one 2-1 in Denver and then took the 1-0 victory in Durango. The teams also played in the RMAC Tournament with FLC taking the 3-0 victory in Durango. In the tournament game, Raul Pescador, Fuentes Carrera and Gibson all tallied goals. Pescador also had the only goal in the 1-0 victory earlier in the season in Durango and in the first meeting in Denver, Pascador tallied one of the two goals again.

In 2016, Regis escaped Durango with a 2-1 win in overtime. The Rangers entered the game ranked 12th in the nation.

In the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll regional rankings, FLC is seventh in the South Central Region and Regis entered the rankings this week in ninth. The top-three in the poll remained the same in Midwestern State, Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines.

Regis is off to a 5-3-1 overall record and 4-1-1 mark in the RMAC. They hold a 2-2-1 mark away from home in true road contests. The Rangers are currently on a three-game winning streak posting three straight shutouts against Dixie State (1-0), CSU-Pueblo (3-0) and Adams State (1-0). Regis has scored 14 goals this season and allowed nine. They have 125 shots to 99 for opponents, with 47 on goal to 31 for the opposition.

Six players have at least four points this season, with Luca Kother leading the way with six points, tallying two goals and two assists. Joe Mansfield, Jake Brown and Parker Klein added two goals apiece. Three players have logged over 800 minutes with Porter Milner and Freddie Swales leading the way at 830 minutes, followed by Mansfield at 829. In net, Chase Webert has started seven games, posting a 0.83 goals against average, with 18 saves and a .750 save percentage. Nick Moyer has played in two games, making four saves and has a 1.50 goals against average.

To close the weekend, FLC will go against UCCS on Sunday. The Mountain Lions are 4-3-2 overall this season and 3-2-1 in RMAC play. They hold a 1-2-1 away record in true road contests. UCCS has won three of their last four games, besting Dixie State (3-2), Adams State (3-0) and CSU-Pueblo (2-0). They pushed Westminster to overtime before falling, 2-3.

Last year, the teams met in the middle of September and played to a 1-1 draw in Colorado Springs. Gibson scored the tying goal for FLC in the 72nd minute. The teams played twice within a week back in 2016, with the Mountain Lions winning both games by 1-0 scores. The second meeting came in the RMAC Tournament, as both matchups occurred in Colorado Springs. This will be the first meeting in Durango since the 2014 season when they played twice in Durango, with FLC winning the regular season meeting, 1-0 and UCCS winning a 5-4 game in the RMAC Tournament.

UCCS has scored 16 goals this season and allowed 14. They have 107 shots to 128 for opponents, with 37 on goal to 54 for the opposition. Alex VonHolle leads the team in points with 15, tallying five goals and five assists. Corey Carabajal adds 11 points with five goals and one assist. VonHolle leads the team with 833 minutes played, followed by Aaron Haefner with 828. In net, Scott Jensen has started seven games and has a 1.29 goals against average, with 24 saves and a .727 save percentage. Marco Seyfert has also played in three games and has a 1.95 goals against average and a .762 save percentage.

In terms of the RMAC standings, Colorado School of Mines is first at 6-0, followed by Colorado Mesa (5-0-1) and both Westminster and Regis are tied for third at 4-1-1. Fort Lewis is tied for fifth with UCCS at 3-2-1, while MSU Denver is seventh at 3-3.
