Women’s Basketball Opens RMAC Play at Adams State Riding Three-Game Win Streak

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Following a pair of close losses, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team has certainly found their rhythm picking up three straight wins. They will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play this Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. in Alamosa against Adams State University.

During their winning streak, FLC (3-2) has defeated Northern New Mexico (92-46), University of the Southwest (94-46) and most recently on Nov. 19 against New Mexico Highlands on the road (77-64). The two losses the Skyhawks have this season have been by a combined five points.

FLC is outscoring opponents by an average of 20.4 points, scoring 77.2 per game and allowing 56.8. The Skyhawks are hitting on over 40 percent from the field and have a solid 71 percent at the foul line. The defense has held the opposition to a 35 percent shooting from the field, 27 percent from three and have forced 120 turnovers leading to an average of 25 points off turnovers per game.

The starting five has been the same all season in Alyssa Yocky, Jordan Carter, Kayla Herrera, Sydney Candelaria and Alyssa Adams. Yocky leads the team in points averaging 14.4 per game, while making 59 percent (27-46) from the field. She's also 4-8 from three and 14-15 at the foul line. If that wasn't enough, she also leads the team in steals with 13, is tied for the lead in blocks with three and has dished out 14 assists, while pulling down and average of 6.6 rebounds per game. Carter is second on the team in scoring at 13.0 per game and is connecting on 51 percent (29-57) from the field. She brings down 5.4 rebounds per game and is tied with Yocky for the team lead in blocks with three. She also has three steals and seven assists. Herrera is just short of averaging 10 points per game at 9.8, as she leads the team in rebounding at 7.6 per contest. She also leads the team in assists with 18, while adding nine steals and a pair of blocks. Candelaria is at 7.8 points per game, along with 4.0 rebounds, eight assists, 11 steals and two blocks. Rounding out the starting five is Adams who averages 6.4 points per game, 2.4 rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Kaitlyn Romero is tied with Herrera for the team lead in three-pointers with six and Romero also has double-digits in assists and steals, both at 10.

FLC ranks high in the RMAC and nationally in several categories including second in the RMAC and 19th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.23), first in the RMAC and 53rd nationally in assists (87), first in the RMAC and 30th nationally in assists per game (17.4), fourth in the RMAC and 92nd nationally in defensive rebounds per game (28), third in the RMAC and 42nd nationally in field goal percentage defense (34.7), second in the RMAC and 77th nationally in free throws made (80), fifth in the RMAC in free throw percentage (71.4), third in the RMAC and 66th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (15), second in the RMAC and 62nd nationally in rebounds per game (42.40), fifth in the RMAC and 46th nationally in scoring defense (56.8), third in the RMAC and 29th nationally in scoring margin (20.4), third in the RMAC and 47th nationally in scoring offense (77.2), first in the RMAC and 26th nationally in steals (64), second in the RMAC and 20th nationally in steals per game (12.8), third in the RMAC and 74th nationally in three point defense (26.7), fifth in the RMAC and 91st nationally in three point field goals made (36), first in the RMAC and ninth nationally in turnover margin (9.80), second in the RMAC and 14th nationally in turnovers forced (24) and fourth in the RMAC and 40th nationally in turnovers per game (14.2).

Individually, Herrera is seventh in the RMAC in both assists (18) and assists per game (3.6), along with being ninth in defensive rebounds per game (5), ninth in rebounds (38) and eighth in rebounds per game (7.6). Yocky is tied for first in the RMAC and tied for 44th nationally in double-doubles (2), seventh in the RMAC in field goals made (27), fourth in the RMAC and 39th nationally in field goal percentage (58.7), second in the RMAC and 22nd nationally in free throw percentage (93.9), fourth in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (3), third in the RMAC and 79th nationally in steals (13) and third in the RMAC and 81st nationally in steals per game (2.60). Carter is sixth in the RMAC in field goals made (29), and ninth in field goal percentage (50.9). Candelaria is sixth in the RMAC in steals (11) and seventh in steals per game (2.20). Romero is eighth in the RMAC in steals per game (2.0).

FLC swept both meetings last year cruising to an 82-47 win in Durango and then a 78-64 win in Alamosa. During the last meeting in Alamosa, Herrera poured in a career-high 36 points on 11-15 shooting. Carter added 16 points and Candelaria added 11. FLC shot 50 percent from the field and 55 percent from three.

The Grizzlies are 0-2 so far this season falling in overtime to Rockhurst and then losing by 15 at William Jewell. They did defeat Northern New Mexico (72-41), but it was just an exhibition contest. Adams State averages 65.5 points per game and allows 74.5. They make 43 percent from the field and allow 43 percent from the opposition. Stephanie Ruiz leads the offense averaging 17.5 points per game. Marshell Hollins adds another 13.5 per contest. Zakiya Beckles is in double-figures at 10 points per game. This will be the first regular season counting home game of the season for the Grizzlies, as the exhibition against Northern New Mexico was played in Plachy Hall on Nov. 16.

The Skyhawks have dominated the series as of late winning the past six meetings. The last win for Adams State came back in the 2014-15 season when Adams State won in Alamosa, 77-74.
