Women’s Basketball Travels to Portales to Open Season

PORTALES, N.M. – A pair of regional contests will open the season for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team when they travel to Portales to face Western New Mexico and host Eastern New Mexico this Friday and Saturday.

FLC will open against Western New Mexico on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and then against host Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The Skyhawks went 20-9 last year, including an impressive 13-2 inside Whalen Gym. FLC finished sixth in the RMAC standings, but tied Regis for fifth and were just a game back of both Colorado School of Mines and Westminster for fourth.

Returner Kayla Herrera is back for her junior season as she was third on the team last year in points per game at 9.4, while leading the team in steals with 53. Jordan Carter is back for her redshirt sophomore season after tallying 5.1 points and 2.6 rebounds, along with 12 blocks in 29 games. Senior Alyssa Yocky played in 17 games a year ago and averaged 5.1 points and 5.5 rebounds along with 11 steals. Kelsey Wainright is back for her senior year after playing in all 29 games and averaging 4.2 points and 3.1 rebounds. Sydney Candelaria made an impact right away as a freshman last year playing in 26 games and averaging 2.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 22 steals. Tanisha Begay also saw time as a freshman playing in 14 games and averaging 2.3 points and 1.0 rebounds. Kaitlyn Romero played in 26 games last year as a sophomore and averaged 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds, along with nine assists.

Head Coach Jason Flores enters his seventh season leading the Skyhawks holding a 110-60 record. He's averaged 20 wins over the past three years.

FLC as a team ranked in the top-three in the RMAC in several categories including assists (430), 71st nationally, second in assists per game (14.8), 65th nationally, first in field goal percentage defense (34.9), sixth nationally, third in free throws made (450, 52nd nationally, second in free throw percentage (75.8), 42nd nationally, third in offensive rebounds per game (13), third in rebound margin (4.2), 62nd nationally, third in rebounds per game (40.10), 95th nationally, third in scoring defense (56.7), 13th nationally, second in scoring margin (11.6), 40th nationally, first in scoring offense (68.3), third in steals per game (8.7), 90th nationally, second in turnover margin (3.24), 47th nationally, third in turnovers forced (18.28), 75th nationally.

Last year, FLC hosted UT Permian Basin and Eastern New Mexico in Durango winning both games to open the season. The Skyhawks defeated Eastern New Mexico 71-54, as returners Wainright, Herrera and Begay combined for 14 points.

Last year, Eastern New Mexico went 16-12 overall and 12-8 in the Lone Star Conference. The Greyhounds have played three exhibition games this season, falling to Arizona (88-31), New Mexico (91-43) and to Colorado State (72-46).

FLC last played Western New Mexico during the 2016-17 season when they played each other twice with the Skyhawks winning in Silver City, 72-54, and then in Durango, 65-49. Western New Mexico went 1-27 last year and 1-19 in the Lone Star Conference. WNMU faced UTEP and University of Arizona to start the season in exhibition action, falling to UTEP 66-45 and to Arizona, 78-61.
