Women’s Basketball to Continue Road Swing at New Mexico Highlands and CSU-Pueblo

LAS VEGAS, N.M./PUEBLO, Colo. – Coming off a close loss at Adams State, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will continue their road trip to start the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference portion of the schedule when they play at New Mexico Highlands on Friday starting at 5 p.m. and then against CSU-Pueblo on Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m.

FLC (3-3, 0-1 RMAC) has lost three games this season by a combined seven points after Adams State held on for the 65-63 win this past weekend. Jordan Carter and Alyssa Yocky both put together strong games as each went for double-doubles with Carter tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Yocky added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Sydney Candelaria (13) and Kayla Herrera (12) also reached double-figures in scoring.

The Skyhawks average 75 points per game and allow 58 points, making 39 percent from the field and allowing 33 percent. FLC has made 42 three-pointers and opponents have made 29. Three average in double-figures in scoring led by Yocky's 13.8 points per game. She also pulls down 7.3 rebounds, 16 assists, 13 steals and three blocks, making 59 percent (31-53) from the field and 4-8 (50) from three. She also holds an 81 percent clip (17-21) from the foul line. Carter is right behind averaging 13.7 points and 6.3 rebounds. She makes 51 percent (37-72) from the field, nine assists, three steals and three blocks. Herrera rounds out the three averaging in double-figures at 10.2 per game. She adds 6.8 rebounds, 21 assists, 11 steals and three blocks. Candelaria chips in 8.7 points per game, making seven three-pointers and 12 steals. The starting five has remained the same all season with Alyssa Adams starting with the other four, as she averages 5.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

FLC ranks in the top-five in the RMAC and nationally in several categories including first in the RMAC and 14th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.24), first in the RMAC and 93rd nationally in assists (98), first in the RMAC and 40th nationally in assists per game (16.3), third in the RMAC and 74th nationally in defensive rebounds per game (28), second in the RMAC and 15th nationally in field goal percentage defense (33.2), first in the RMAC in free throws made (89), third in the RMAC and 47th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (15), fourth in the RMAC in rebounds (260), first in the RMAC and 40th nationally in rebounds per game (43.33), fourth in the RMAC and 50th nationally in scoring defense (58.2), first in the RMAC and 30th nationally in scoring margin (16.7), second in the RMAC and 58th nationally in scoring offense (74.8), first in the RMAC and 64th nationally in steals (71), second in the RMAC and 30th nationally in steals per game (11.8), second in the RMAC and 57th nationally in three point field goal defense (26.6), fifth in the RMAC in three point field goals made (42), first in the RMAC and 11th nationally in turnover margin (8.67), second in the RMAC and 35th nationally in turnovers forced (21.83) and second in the RMAC and 17th nationally in turnovers per game (13.2).

Individually, Herrera is sixth in the RMAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.40), seventh in the RMAC in assists (21), eighth in the RMAC in assists per game (3.5). Yocky is first in the RMAC and 36th nationally in double-doubles (3), third in the RMAC and 27th nationally in field goal percentage (58.5), seventh in the RMAC in free throw percentage (81), fourth in the RMAC and 82nd nationally in offensive rebounds per game (3), 10th in the RMAC in points per game (13.8), ninth in the RMAC in rebounds per game (7.3), fourth in the RMAC in steals (13) and fifth in the RMAC in steals per game (2.17). Carter is sixth in the RMAC in field goals made (37) and seventh in the RMAC in field goal percentage (51.4). Candelaria is sixth in the RMAC in steals per game (2.0).

First up will be a matchup with New Mexico Highlands. The two teams already played a non-conference game earlier this year in Las Vegas as the Skyhawks took the 77-64 victory back on Nov. 19. In that game, Adams, Yocky and Carter all led the team with 11 points apiece, while Tanisha Begay added 10. The Skyhawks started strong rolling out to a 20-5 lead after the first quarter. Including the win this season, FLC has won the past 10 games in the series with the last win for the Cowgirls coming during the 2013-14 season when they won in Las Vegas, 74-63.

NMHU is 2-6 on the season and lost at home this past weekend to open RMAC play against CSU-Pueblo, 76-48. The two wins on the season both came against the University of the Southwest. The Cowgirls average 54 points and allow 69 points, they make 36 percent from the field and allow a 42 percent clip.
The Cowgirls have played just nine players this season, with seven seeing regular playing time. Former Skyhawk Jordyn Lewis leads the team with 15.1 points, while Ari Baca adds 8.7, but is no longer on the team. Allyah George adds 8.4 points and Brianna Stewart is at 7.8. DeAvion Allen pulls down 7.3 rebounds per game.

FLC will close the weekend with a Saturday matchup against CSU-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves are 3-4 overall on the season and have picked up wins against Texas A&M-Commerce, Montana Western and most recently against New Mexico Highlands. CSU-Pueblo won both games last year, taking the first meeting in Pueblo, 63-48 and then held on for a 63-61 win in Durango. In the first meeting, returners Herrera, Kelsey Wainright and Carter added four points apiece. In the meeting in Durango, Herrera tallied 14 points and Wainright added four. The ThunderWolves have won the past 11 meetings in the series with the last FLC win coming during the 2012-13 season when they won two games that year against CSU-Pueblo, one during the regular season and another in the RMAC Tournament.

CSU-Pueblo averages 71 points and allows 70 points, they make 43 percent from the field and allow 40 percent. Six players average in double-figures, but two have only played a game in Kansas Watts (13 points) and Naomi Torgerson (12 points). JaNaiya Davis leads the team with 12.6 points and adds 5.1 rebounds, 26 assists and 13 steals. Jennah Knafelc averages 12.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 27 assists and 17 steals. Sydni Williams (11.3) and Khiya Adams (10.6) round out the group in double-figures.
