Women’s Basketball Continues Homestand Against Mountaineers, #23 Mavericks

DURANGO, Colo. – After splitting a pair of home games this past weekend, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will conclude their four-game home set against Western Colorado on Friday and #23 Colorado Mesa on Saturday with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.

Both Western Colorado and Colorado Mesa will enter this weekend ranked in the latest D2SIDA South Central Region Poll with the Mavericks currently second behind only West Texas A&M and the Mountaineers tied for ninth with Tarleton State.

This is the start of the schedule where the Skyhawks will be playing each of the teams twice down the stretch. FLC will face Colorado Mesa and Western Colorado again on the road Feb. 22-23.

FLC (7-8, 3-6 RMAC) picked up a dominating 67-50 win over UC-Colorado Springs on Friday night. Kayla Herrera led the way with 15 points, while Sydney Candelaria added 13 and Alyssa Yocky with 10. The Skyhawks shot 46 percent from the field and forced 17 turnovers. Herrera also led the team the next night against Colorado School of Mines going for 18 points.

Some upcoming or recently set milestones include Yocky who passed 800 career points on Saturday and is now at 807. She's just 47 points away from landing in 22nd in program history for scoring. Yocky is also at 100 career steals with her four against the Orediggers and with her 36 blocked shots, she currently is tied for 20th in program history in career blocks. Her 633 rebounds are currently eighth in program history, she is just 45 away from seventh and is 71 away from breaking into the top-five. Yocky's 295 career field goals is just 23 shy of 23rd in program history. Her 48 three-pointers is two away from 21st in program history and she is 13 away from 20th. Her 163 free throws leave her just three away from 22nd in program history. She is 18 away from landing in the top-15. Herrera's 77 three-pointers is already 15th in program history and she is just six away from moving into the top-14. She's also approaching 800 career points and is currently at 786. Her 366 rebounds put her 53 away from being in the top-23 in program history. Her 283 field goals are 35 away from landing in the top-23 in program history. Herrera's 189 assists are just 22 away from 20th in program history and her 129 steals is just four away from landing in the top-20 in program history. Jordan Carter is approaching 300 career points, currently at 292. She's one rebound away from 150 in her career (149) and is quickly on the verge of 150 made field goals, currently at 128. Kaitlyn Romero is right at 250 career points after scoring 10 over the weekend. She's 15 field goals away from 100 in her career (85) and is four three-pointers away from 50 (46). Candelaria is approaching 250 career points, currently at 225, is 24 field goals away from 100 (76) and is four steals away from 50 (46). Kelsey Wainright recently hit 75 field goals this past weekend and is just over 200 career points at 208. Head Coach Jason Flores is eight wins away from 125 in his career, currently 117-68.

As a team, FLC is averaging 69 points and allowing 59 points, making 40 percent from the field and allowing 36 percent. Yocky leads the team at 11.9 points per game, along with 8.3 rebounds, 43 assists, 30 steals, five blocks and is shooting 50 percent from the field. Herrera is at 11.3 points per game, 5.3 rebounds, 50 assists, 26 steals, six blocks and has made 23 three-pointers. Candelaria is at 10.5 points per game, 3.6 rebounds, 23 assists, 25 steals, two blocks and has made 15 three-pointers. Rounding out the four that have started all 15 games this year includes Carter who is at 10.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 15 assists, 11 steals, eight blocks and is shooting 46 percent from the field. Aubre Fortner comes off the bench to add five points and 2.7 rebounds, along with seven assists and six steals. Romero has started each of the past three games and is averaging 3.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, 14 assists and 16 steals, along with 12 three-pointers.

In terms of where FLC ranks in the RMAC (in the top-five) and nationally (in the top-100) includes second in the RMAC and 31st nationally in assist-to-turnover (1.13), first in the RMAC and 65th nationally in assists (223), second in the RMAC and 81st nationally in assists per game (14.9), fourth in the RMAC and 36th nationally in fewest turnovers (198), third in the RMAC and 38th nationally in field goal percentage defense (36.1), fourth in the RMAC in free throws made (175), third in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (13), third in the RMAC and 90th nationally in rebounds (593), fourth in the RMAC in rebounds per game (39.53), fifth in the RMAC and 46th nationally in scoring defense (58.6), second in the RMAC and 58th nationally in scoring margin (10.7), fourth in the RMAC in scoring offense (69.3), first in the RMAC and 37th nationally in steals (154), first in the RMAC and 44th nationally in steals per game (10.3), first in the RMAC and 41st nationally in three-point field goal defense (27.5), fifth in the RMAC in three-point field goals made (97), first in the RMAC and 22nd nationally in turnover margin (5.93), first in the RMAC and 66th nationally in turnovers forced (19.13) and second in the RMAC and 18th nationally in turnovers per game (13.2).

Individually, Herrera is seventh in the RMAC in assists (50), ninth in the RMAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.14) and steals (26), while coming in 10th in assists per game (3.3). Yocky is third in the RMAC and 87th nationally in rebounds (124), third in the RMAC in rebounds per game (8.3) and in steals (30), fourth in steals per game (2.0), fifth in offensive rebounds per game (3) and sixth in defensive rebounds per game (5). Carter is 10th in the RMAC in field goals made (72).

The Skyhawks will open the week on Friday against Western Colorado. Last year, the teams played twice with FLC winning both, first in Durango, 68-54 and then in Gunnison, 74-56. In the most recent meeting in Gunnison, Herrera tallied 19 points and Yocky added eight points and 13 rebounds. FLC has won the past 20 meetings in the series, with the last win coming for Western Colorado during the 2008-09 season taking the 69-61 win in Gunnison.

This year's Western Colorado team has been on a roll, currently 10-3 and 6-3 in the RMAC, having won three straight. The Mountaineers are 8-0 away from Gunnison going 4-0 in true road contests and 4-0 un neutral games. After a home loss to Black Hills State (48-59), Western Colorado then defeated South Dakota Mines (60-49) and this past weekend on the road at CSU-Pueblo (71-62) and New Mexico Highlands (69-51).

The Mountaineers average 63 points and allow 54 points, making 44 percent from the field and holding opponents to a 34 percent clip. Samantha Coleman leads the offense at 12.1 points per game, while Katie Dalton is also in double-figures at 10.4 per game. Tammarrah Gothard (7.5) and Jessie Erickson (7.0) round out the top-four scorers.

To close the weekend, FLC will go against Colorado Mesa on Saturday. The Mavericks are 12-1 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in RMAC play, currently in a tie for first with Westminster. They hold a 5-0 record away from home in true road contests, with their only loss coming in a neutral site game against Western Oregon in the second game of the season. Since then, Colorado Mesa has won 11 straight games. This past weekend they picked up road wins at New Mexico Highlands (79-50) and CSU-Pueblo (67-58).

As a team, Colorado Mesa averages 67 points and allows 51 points, while making 41 percent from the field and holding opponents to a 34 percent clip. Jaylyn Duran has been a force all season leading the team in scoring at 22.2 points per game, Kylyn Rigsby is second at 9.0 points per game. Last year, the teams split the meetings with each team winning on their home floors. FLC took the first meeting in Durango, 57-51, with Wainright tallying eight points and Herrera adding seven. In the second meeting in Grand Junction, Colorado Mesa claimed the 66-52 victory, as Wainright added eight points.

A look around the RMAC has Colorado Mesa and Westminster at the top with 9-0 marks, Western Colorado and CSU-Pueblo are tied for third at 6-3, Black Hills State, Regis, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Christian and UC-Colorado Springs are all tied for fifth at 5-4, Dixie State and MSU Denver are tied for 10th at 4-5, Fort Lewis is 12th at 3-6, South Dakota Mines and Chadron State are tied for 13th, while New Mexico Highlands and Adams State are tied for 15th at 1-8.
