DURANGO, Colo. – Western Colorado University held a 25-6 edge on free throws on their way to defeating the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team 64-54 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Friday night inside Whalen Gym.

FLC (7-9, 3-7 RMAC) ended up being whistled for 26 fouls, while WCU (11-3, 7-3 RMAC) was called for 12. The Skyhawks won both the first (20-18) and fourth quarters (13-10), but the Mountaineers took advantage in the second and third quarters outscoring the Skyhawks 36-21.

Alyssa Yocky again put together a nice game with 14 points on 5-10 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. She also grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists, sent back a block and had three steals in 33 minutes. Aubre Fortner just missed out on double-figures with nine points on 4-8 shooting, while Sydeny Candelaria added eight.

Yocky tallied the first points of the game 42 seconds in with a three-pointer. Kayla Herrera kept the lead at three with a jumper a minute later. After falling behind by one, a Fortner layup and then Candelaria three had the FLC lead at four, 12-8, near the midway point of the first quarter.

After that, neither team had more than a two-point lead the remainder of the quarter and after two free throws by MorningRose Tobey, the Skyhawks were up 20-18 through the first 10 minutes.

The Mountaineers started the second quarter on a 6-0 run to open up a 24-20 lead. The Skyhawks answered with their own run, an 8-0 variety to retake the lead. Kaitlyn Romero started the run with a three-pointer. After Candelaria hit a triple, Fortner closed the run with a jumper at the 6:23 mark for a 28-24 lead.

A pair of free throws by Yocky had FLC with a 31-25 lead when the Mountaineers closed the half on a 10-2 run over the final five minutes to take a 35-33 lead into the locker rooms.

The run ended up reaching 13-2 with a three-pointer by Samantha Coleman a minute into the second half. A pair of layups from Tanisha Begay and Herrera helped trim the deficit to one near the midway point of the quarter.

Similar to the second quarter, Western Colorado went on a run, a 9-0 variety this time to push the lead to 10 at 49-39 with three minutes to play. The Mountaineers would add three points to their lead to take a 54-41 lead into the final frame.

Still trailing by 13, FLC began to work their way back into the contest. Yocky hit a jumper in the paint, then stepped back and sunk a three. Following a Fortner three, the Skyhawks had pulled back to within five at 56-51 with 6:51 to play.
