Women’s Basketball Hits The Road to Face Regis, Colorado Christian

DENVER/LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Following a four-game homestand, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will hit the road to face Regis on Friday and Colorado Christian on Saturday with both games set to being at 5 p.m.

FLC (7-10, 3-8 RMAC) played a couple of tough home games this past weekend falling just short to both Western Colorado (54-64) and Colorado Mesa (52-61). Last time out against the nationally-ranked Mavericks, the Skyhawks stayed right with Colorado Mesa, before a late run won the game. Hanna Valencia had a breakout game with 14 points, while Jordan Carter added 12.

Some upcoming or recently set milestones include Yocky who passed 800 career points and is now at 829. She's just 25 points away from landing in 22nd in program history for scoring. Yocky is also at 104 career steals and with her 38 blocked shots, she currently 20th in program history in career blocks, just one away from tying for 19th. Her 648 rebounds are currently eighth in program history, she is just 30 away from seventh and is 55 away from breaking into the top-five. Yocky's 303 career field goals is just 15 shy of 23rd in program history. Her 50 three-pointers is currently 21st in program history and she is 11 away from 20th. Her 167 free throws is 22nd in program history, just six away from landing in the top-20 and 13 away from landing in the top-15. Herrera's 77 three-pointers is already 15th in program history and she is just six away from moving into the top-14. She's also approaching 800 career points and is currently at 796. Her 375 rebounds put her 44 away from being in the top-23 in program history. Her 286 field goals are 32 away from landing in the top-23 in program history. Herrera's 196 assists are just 13 away from 20th in program history and her 132 steals leaves her one away from landing in the top-20 in program history. Jordan Carter recently eclipsed 300 career points, currently at 306. She also just went over 150 career assists, sitting at 155 and is quickly on the verge of 150 made field goals, currently at 134. Kaitlyn Romero recently went over 250 career points and is at 253. She's 14 field goals away from 100 in her career (86) and is three three-pointers away from 50 (47). Candelaria is approaching 250 career points, currently at 242, is 18 field goals away from 100 (82) and with four steals this past weekend, is right at 50 for her career. Kelsey Wainright recently hit 75 field goals, currently at 77 and is just over 200 career points at 212. Head Coach Jason Flores is eight wins away from 125 in his career, currently 117-70.

As a team, FLC averages 67 points and allows 59 points, making 40 percent from the field and allowing 37 percent. Yocky, Herrera, Candelaria and Carter all average in double-figures and have started all 17 games this season. Yocky is averaging 11.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 46 assists, 34 steals and seven blocks, while making 51 percent from the field. Herrera is at 10.6 points per game, 5.2 rebounds, 57 assists, 29 steals and six blocks. Candelaria is at 10.3 points per game, 3.4 rebounds, 24 assists, 29 steals, two blocks and is shooting 40 percent from the field. Carter averages 10.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, along with 18 assists, 12 steals, nine blocks and is shooting 45 percent from the field. Kaitlyn Romero has started each of the past five games and is at 3.6 points, 1.7 rebounds, 16 assists, 18 steals and has connected on 13 three-pointers. Aubre Fortner (5.2) and Valencia (4.0) are the top scorers off the bench.

FLC ranks in the top-five in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and in the top-100 nationally in several categories including second in the RMAC and 50th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.03), first in the RMAC and 92nd nationally in assists (245), second in the RMAC and 93rd nationally in assists per game (14.4), 55th nationally in fewest turnovers (239), third in the RMAC and 46th nationally in field goal percentage defense (36.5), fourth in the RMAC in free throws made (197), third in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (12), fourth in the RMAC in rebounds (650), fourth in the RMAC in rebounds per game (38.24), third in the RMAC and 46th nationally in scoring defense (59.1), fourth in the RMAC and 72nd nationally in scoring margin (8.4), fourth in the RMAC in scoring offense (67.4), first in the RMAC and 49th nationally in steals (171), second in the RMAC and 52nd nationally in steals per game (10.1), first in the RMAC and 37th nationally in three point field goal defense (27.8), fifth in the RMAC in three point field goals made (107), second in the RMAC and 32nd nationally in turnover margin (4.76), first in the RMAC and 71st nationally in turnovers forced (18.82) and third in the RMAC and 35th nationally in turnovers per game (14.1).

Individually, Herrera is fifth in the RMAC in assists (57), eighth in the RMAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.08) and in steals (29), and ninth in the RMAC in assists per game (3.4). Yocky is third in the RMAC in defensive rebounds per game (6), in rebounds (139) and rebounds per game (8.2). fourth in the RMAC in steals (34), fifth in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (3) and in steals per game (2.0). Candelaria is eighth in the RMAC in steals (29).

First up, the Skyhawks will face Regis in Denver on Friday. The Rangers are 9-7 overall and 5-6 in the RMAC, currently on a two-game losing streak after falling at home to both Westminster (64-69) and Dixie State (70-74). Regis is 4-4 at home this season. The Rangers average 65 points and allow 60 points, while making 36 percent from the field and allowing a 41 percent clip.

Majestie Robinson leads the team averaging 12.3 points per game. Jaz'Myne Snipes is at 9.6 points, Whitney Jacob adds 9.5 and Elly Walters is at 8.9 per game. The two teams split last year's meetings with FLC winning the first game in Durango, 54-48, while Regis took the second meeting in overtime in Denver, 74-70. Herrera and Carter tallied six points apiece during the first meeting in Durango.

The Skyhawks will finish the trip on Saturday in Lakewood against Colorado Christian. The Cougars are 8-9 overall and 6-5 in RMAC play, currently on a one-game losing streak and are 5-4 at home this season. This past weekend, Colorado Christian rolled to a 78-61 win over Dixie State, but then fell to Westminster, 44-62.

As a team, the Cougars average 66 points and allow 68 points, making 42 percent from the field and allowing a 39 percent clip. Jordan Baer leads the way at 19.6 points and 7.1 rebounds, while Sarah McGinley tallies 14.3 points. Olivia Christy is at 10.5 points per game, but only played four games this season.
Last year, the teams played once in Durango at the Skyhawks rolled to a 74-43 win. Yocky tallied 13 points, Herrera added 11 and Candelaria had nine points. FLC took the last meeting in Lakewood as well back in 2016-17 claiming the 86-76 victory. The last win for Colorado Christian came during the 2015-16 season when the Cougars took the 72-69 win in Lakewood.

A look around the RMAC has Colorado Mesa and Westminster tied for first with 11-0 records. Western Colorado sits third at 8-3. Colorado School of Mines and CSU-Pueblo are tied for fourth at 7-4. Black Hills State, Colorado Christian, MSU Denver and UC-Colorado Springs are all tied for sixth at 6-5. Dixie State and Regis are both 5-6 and are tied for 10th. Fort Lewis is 12th at 3-8. South Dakota Mines, New Mexico Highlands and Chadron State are tied for 13th with 2-9 records, while Adams State is 16th with a 1-10 record.
