Women's Basketball Opens Four-Game Homestand This Weekend Against UCCS, Colorado School of Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – After a tough road trip, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will hope a return home will spark the team, as the Skyhawks are 4-1 on their home floor this season. FLC will face UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines this Friday and Saturday for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play starting at 5:30 p.m. both nights.

On the season, FLC is 6-7 overall and 2-5 in RMAC play, falling by a point (65-66) in their last game against Chadron State. In that game, Sydney Candelaria led the way with 17 points, Kayla Herrera added 16 and Kaitlyn Romero, making her first start of the season, added 13 points. Alyssa Yocky grabbed 15 rebounds and added six assists.

The last home game on New Year's Eve was a good one for the Skyhawks as they rolled to a 93-46 win against Northern New Mexico. Other home wins include South Dakota Mines, University of the Southwest and Northern New Mexico (back on Nov. 14).

Upcoming milestones to watch include Yocky who is approaching 800 career points, currently sitting at 788 entering this weekend. She is also six steals away from 100 in her career and recently went over 100 assists as well, currently at 114. Herrera is at 753 career points entering this weekend, has almost 125 career steals (122) and is approaching 200 career assists, currently at 184. In just her second season, Jordan Carter has 279 career points, already eclipsing last year's 134 points with 145 this year. Candelaria has already doubled her point total from last year of 67 with 140 this year, quickly approaching 250 career points (207). Romero is closing in on 250 career points, currently at 240. Head Coach Jason Flores is nine wins away from 125 in his career, currently at 116-67.

This season, FLC is averaging 71 points and allowing 59 points, shooting 40 percent from the field and allowing a 37 percent clip. Yocky leads the way at 12.3 points per game, while adding 8.2 rebounds, 40 assists, 24 steals and five blocks in starting all 13 games. She's shooting 52 percent (60-115) from the field and 8-17 (47) from three. Carter has also started all 13 games and adds 11.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 15 assists, nine steals and seven blocks. She's making 48 percent (67-139) from the field. Candelaria is averaging 10.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in starting all 13 games. She's added 20 assists, 23 steals and two blocks, along with 13 three-pointers. Herrera rounds out the four to start every game this season and is the fourth player to average in double-figures at 10.5. She also brings down 5.5 rebounds, 45 assists, 19 steals and six blocks, while making 21 three-pointers. Aubre Fortner leads the scoring off the bench at five points per game, along with 2.5 rebounds, seven assists, six steals and two blocks. Romero, who started in place of the injured Alyssa Adams, is at 3.8 points, 1.4 rebounds, 13 assists, 15 steals and one block and has connected on 10 three-pointers.

FLC ranks high in several RMAC and national categories including second in the RMAC and 19th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.18), first in the RMAC and 45th nationally in assists (201), first in the RMAC and 63rd nationally in assists per game (15.5), third in the RMAC and 38th nationally in fewest turnovers (170), third in the RMAC and 66th nationally in field goal percentage defense (36.8), fifth in the RMAC in free throws made (155), third in the RMAC and 84th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (14), third in the RMAC and 92nd nationally in rebounds (519), third in the RMAC in rebounds per game (39.92), fifth in the RMAC and 54th nationally in scoring defense (59.2), second in the RMAC and 51st nationally in scoring margin (12.1), fourth in the RMAC and 91st nationally in scoring offense (71.2), first in the RMAC and 45th nationally in steals (134), second in the RMAC and 51st nationally in steals per game (10.3), first in the RMAC and 49th nationally in three point field goal defense (27.3), fourth in the RMAC and 86th nationally in three point field goals made (89), first in the RMAC and 17th nationally in turnover margin (6.77), first in the RMAC and 55th nationally in turnovers forced (19.85) and second in the RMAC and 19th nationally in turnovers per game (13.1).

Individually, Yocky is second in the RMAC and 93rd nationally in rebounds (107), third in the RMAC in rebounds per game (8.2), third in the RMAC and 45th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.90), fourth in the RMAC in steals (24), fifth in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (3) and steals per game (1.85), ninth in the RMAC in assists (40) and 10th in the RMAC in defensive rebounds per game (5). Herrera is sixth in the RMAC in assists (45), eighth in the RMAC in assists per game (3.5) and 10th in the RMAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.13). Carter is fourth in the RMAC in field goal percentage (48.2) and sixth in the RMAC in field goals made (67). Candelaria is seventh in the RMAC in steals (23).

FLC will open the week on Friday night against UC-Colorado Springs. Last year, the teams matched up in Durango and the Skyhawks took the 69-57 victory. Kelsey Wainright tallied 13 points, as the Skyhawks forced 25 turnovers. During the 2016-17 season, the teams played in Colorado Springs and UCCS picked up the 75-71 victory.

The Mountain Lions are 5-8 overall this season but are 4-3 in RMAC play. They've gone 1-3 away from home in true road contests. This past weekend, they defeated Dixie State (59-54), before falling to Westminster (60-75). UCCS is averaging 58 points and allowing 65 points, making 39 percent from the field and allowing 38 percent. The Mountain Lions have even point distribution seven players averaging at least 5.2 points per game. Jae Ferrin leads the team at 8.5 points, followed by Abby Feickert's 8.2.

To close the week, FLC will face Colorado School of Mines on Saturday. The Orediggers are 6-6 overall and 3-4 in RMAC play but have started to pick up steam winning three of their last four conference games. They have yet to win on the road this year at 0-3. This past weekend, they stayed with Westminster for a while before falling (50-61) and then defeated Dixie State (86-81). During their last road game, Colorado School of Mines stayed with the top team in the RMAC at Colorado Mesa, falling by just five in Grand Junction (45-50).

Colorado School of Mines averages 65 points and allows 62 points, making 37 percent from the field and allowing a 38 percent clip. Denali Pinto leads the offense at 12 points per game, having started 10 games this year. Nicole Archambeau adds 11.7 points and Raven Herrera gives the Orediggers three players in double-figures at 10.9. Anna Kollmorgen is just short of double-figures at 9.8.

Last year, the teams met in Golden and the Orediggers picked up the 57-53 victory. Herrera and Yocky scored seven points apiece. FLC won the last meeting in Durango during the 2016-17 season, 72-60. Herrera had a big game going for 27 points on 9-13 shooting.

A look around the RMAC has both Colorado Mesa and Westminster tied for first with 7-0 conference marks. CSU-Pueblo is third at 6-1, while Black Hills State rounds out the top-four with a 5-2 record. Western Colorado, Colorado Christian, MSU Denver and UC-Colorado Springs are all tied for fifth at 4-3. Regis and Colorado School of Mines are tied for ninth at 3-4. Dixie State, Fort Lewis and Chadron State are tied for 11th with 2-5 records. South Dakota Mines, New Mexico Highlands and Adams State round out the rest of the group tied for 14th with 1-6 records.
