Softball Set For Cactus Classic This Weekend in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – The third and final non-conference tournament of the season arrives this week for the Fort Lewis College softball team when they will travel to Tucson to compete in the Cactus Classic Friday through Sunday.

The Skyhawks will face UT Permian Basin first on Friday at 10 a.m. and then will go against Saint Martin's at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday, FLC will open against Biola at 3 p.m. and then face St. Mary's at 5:30 p.m. To close the classic on Sunday, the Skyhawks will go against Simon Fraser at 9 a.m. All times are Pacific Standard Time.

FLC enters the week with a 4-4 record after dominating Northwest Nazarene to conclude the Dixie State Courtyard Classic, 12-5. Angelique Elemen had a week to remember, as she broke both the program home run and RBI records and was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA D2 National Player of the Week after earning RMAC Player of the Week honors earlier.

Elemen is already off to a strong start to the season leading the team in batting average (.462), hits (12), doubles (3), home runs (5) and is tied with Taylor Hollestelle for the team lead in RBI with seven. She also has a 1.154 slugging percentage and a .548 on-base percentage. Pilar Gutierrez adds a .417 average with 10 hits, a double, a home run and three RBI. McKenna Hefley tallies a .370 batting average, 10 hits, two doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Hollestelle rounds out the regulars holding a .300 average as she is right at .300 with nine hits, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. As a team, FLC has a .295 batting average and opponents are at .273. The Skyhawks have 70 hits, 47 runs scored, nine doubles, a triple, 12 home runs and 42 RBI.

In the circle, Emily Morris has picked up a pair of wins, along with a 3.39 ERA in six appearances, four starts. She's also added 13 strikeouts in 20.2 innings. Kassidy Trumbo also has a win on the season in three appearances, holding a 3.50 ERA in eight innings. As a staff, FLC has a 4.09 ERA while opponents are at a 5.22 clip.

As a team, FLC ranks in the top-five in the RMAC and in the top-100 nationally in several categories including 80th nationally in batting average (.295), fourth in the RMAC and 100th nationally in earned run average (4.09), fourth in the RMAC and 79th nationally in fielding percentage (.956), fourth in the RMAC and 56th nationally in hit batters (3), first in the RMAC and eighth nationally in home runs per game (1.50), fifth in the RMAC and 57th nationally in scoring (5.88), 40th nationally in slugging percentage (.494), fourth in the RMAC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.36), 99th nationally in triples per game (0.13) and third in the RMAC and 82nd nationally in win-loss percentage (.500).

Individually, Elemen is first in the RMAC and eighth nationally in home runs per game (0.63), first in the RMAC and first nationally in home runs (5), first in the RMAC and 14th nationally in slugging percentage (1.154), first in the RMAC and first nationally in toughest to strikeout (0.0), first in the RMAC and second nationally in total bases (30), third in the RMAC and 52nd nationally in runs per game (1.25), fifth in the RMAC and 44th nationally in doubles (3), sixth in the RMAC and 65th nationally in hits (12) and eighth in the RMAC in doubles per game (0.38). McKenna Hefley is fifth in the RMAC and 38th nationally in home runs (2), sixth in the RMAC and 74th nationally in home runs per game (0.25) and eighth in the RMAC and 79th nationally in total bases (18). Hollestelle is fifth in the RMAC and 38th nationally in home runs (2), sixth in the RMAC and 74th nationally in home runs per game (0.25) and 97th nationally in total bases (17). Kylie Hefley is first in the RMAC and 22nd nationally in sacrifice flies (1). Morris is second in the RMAC and 48th nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.33), third in the RMAC and 58th nationally in walks allowed per seven innings (1.02). Trumbo is fourth in the RMAC and 68th nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.50) and fifth in the RMAC in walks allowed per seven innings (1.75). Allison Young is fifth in the RMAC and 29th nationally in triples (1) and is seventh in the RMAC in triples per game (0.13).

Last year, FLC went 3-1 in Tucson defeating Franklin Pierce, Southern Nazarene and Western Oregon.

First up, the Skyhawks will face UT Permian Basin as the Falcons are 1-5 after opening the season with a win over Chadron State. Last time out, UC-Colorado Springs rolled to a 13-4 win over UT Permian Basin. Valerie Gonzalez leads the team with a .500 batting average and three RBI. Alyssa Lopez (.364) and April Arellano (.313) are also hitting over .300. As a team, the Falcons are hitting .214 as a team, while opponents are at .419.

In the circle, Abrie Castillo leads the team with a 6.20 ERA in 14.2 innings of work. Sloan Springfield has tossed 11 innings and has a 14.00 ERA and has the team victory this season. As a team, the Falcons have a 9.55 ERA and opponents are at 1.40.

The Skyhawks will conclude Friday with a matchup against Saint Martin's out of Washington. The Saints are 2-1 after wins against Stanislaus State and Colorado Christian in the Desert Stinger. Sabrina Hicks is off to a .636 batting average with two home runs and seven RBI. Lauren Diuco adds a .500 average and Trinity Favela is at .455. As a team, Saint Martin's has a .330 batting average and opponents are at .352.

In the circle, Kimberlyn Tutt has a 0.00 ERA in an inning worked, while Brandi Schoessler has both wins in 12.1 innings worked with a 2.84 ERA.

To start Saturday, FLC will open with Biola out of California. Biola is 0-2 after falling to Hope International in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Ruth Munoz leads the team with a .667 average, while Kylie Velasco (.571) and Andi Hormel (.500) are both hitting over .500. Velasco has a home run and four RBI. As a team, the Eagles have a .356 batting average and opponents are at .311.

In the circle, Paige Austin has a 3.38 ERA in eight innings worked. Kaile Chavez has a 7.71 ERA in 2.1 innings. As a staff, Biola has a 7.71 ERA and opponents are at the same 7.71 ERA.

To close Saturday, FLC will go against St. Mary's out of Texas. The Rattlers are 4-4 with wins against Tarleton State, West Texas A&M, Regis and Colorado School of Mines. Taylor Germain leads the team with a .450 batting average and five RBI. Victoria Aldridge (.391) and Kristal Salinas (.364) both have over a .350 batting average. AS a team, St. Mary's has a .261 batting average and have held opponents to a .217 clip.

In the circle, Staci Johns has a 1.89 ERA in 29.2 innings worked and a pair of wins. Julia Cruz has the other two wins after tossing 19.2 innings and has a 2.85 ERA. As a staff the Rattlers have a 2.43 ERA and opponents are at 2.64.

To close the Cactus Classic, FLC will face Simon Fraser out of Canada on Sunday. This will be the first games of the season for the Clan after going 21-19 last year. Kate Ferguson returns after posting a .315 batting average and 18 RBI last year. Hailey Gearey is also back after tallying a .303 average, a home run and 10 RBI last season.

In the circle, Jessica Tate returns after throwing in 87.1 innings and a 5.77 ERA last season with five wins. Kendra Ho is also back after throwing 6.2 innings and holding a 5.25 ERA.
