Women’s Basketball Continues Homestand Versus Westminster, Dixie State

DURANGO, Colo. – After another pair of close home games, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will continue their four-game homestand this weekend when they face Westminster on Friday and Dixie State on Saturday with both games starting at 5:30 p.m. inside Whalen Gym. Saturday's game will be 100 percent donation only, with all proceeds benefiting the Griego Family. Saturday will also be Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night up in the Hawks Perch. 

FLC is 9-14 overall and 5-12 in RMAC playing, posting a 5-6 record at home. This past weekend the Skyhawks came close against both Colorado Christian (48-59) and Regis (39-49). Last time out against the Rangers was a defensive struggle with Kayla Herrera leading the way with 15 points. Alyssa Yocky brought down 13 rebounds, Jordan Carter added seven points and Sydney Candelaria chipped in six.

The Skyhawks just faced Dixie State and Westminster on Feb. 1-2, as FLC claimed the 66-60 win over the Trailblazers and then almost pulled out the win against Westminster before falling just short, 62-69. In the win against Dixie State, Candelaria had a big game going for 20 points. Yocky and Aubre Fortner added nine points apiece. Against Westminster, Carter had a big game inside with 16 points and six rebounds, while Candelaria added 12 points.

Some upcoming or recently set milestones include Yocky who went over 850 career points and is now at 879. She's 21st in program history and is just 14 points from breaking into the top-20. Yocky is also at 119 career steals, 14 from breaking into the top-20 and with her 41 blocked shots, she's currently tied for 17th in program history in career blocks, just three away from tying for 16th. Her 700 rebounds are currently tied for sixth in program history, just three away from landing in the top-five. Yocky's 311 career field goals is just seven shy of 23rd in program history. Her 53 three-pointers is currently 21st in program history and she is seven away from 20th. Her 176 free throws are 18th in program history, leaving her four from the top-15. Herrera's 85 three-pointers is tied for 13th in program history and leaves her 29 from the top-10. Her 407 rebounds put her 12 away from being in the top-23 in program history. Her 314 field goals are four away from landing in the top-23 in program history. Herrera's 214 assists are 16th in program history and her 147 steals is 17th in program history and she is just two away from landing in the top-15. Herrera eclipsed 850 career points this past weekend, currently at 866, putting her in a tie for 22nd. Carter recently went over 350 career points, currently at 365. She also just went over 150 career assists, sitting at 157 and just passed 150 field goals, currently at 163. Kaitlyn Romero recently went over 250 career points and is at 267. She's nine field goals away from 100 in her career (91) and just went over 50 career three-pointers, currently at 51. Candelaria recently went over 300 career points, currently at 301 after scoring 16 points this weekend, she just went over 100 field goals, currently at 103 and recently went over 50 steals, sitting at 57. Kelsey Wainright recently hit 75 field goals, currently at 77 and is just over 200 career points at 212. Tanisha Begay went over 100 career points recently and is at 101. Fortner is pushing towards 125 points in her first year at FLC, sitting at 121. She's also just five field goals away from 50 (45) and is approaching 75 rebounds, currently at 71. Hanna Valencia sits one point away from 100 in her career (99). Head Coach Jason Flores is six wins away from 125 in his career, currently 119-74.

Yocky and Herrera are tied for the team lead in scoring at 10.9 per game, while Yocky pulls down 8.3 rebounds, 53 assists, 49 steals, 10 blocks and is shooting 50 percent from the field. Herrera adds 5.2 rebounds, 75 assists, 44 steals and six blocks while making 31 three-pointers. Candelaria is at 10.2 points per game, along with 3.5 rebounds, 38 assists, 36 steals and two blocks while shooting 40 percent from the field. Carter rounds out the four averaging in double-figures at 10 per game while grabbing 4.5 rebounds, 20 assists, 14 steals, 10 blocks and is shooting 47 percent from the field. Off the bench Fortner adds 5.3 points and Valencia is at 4.3.

FLC ranks in the top-five and in the top-100 nationally in several categories including fifth in the RMAC and 95th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.91), fourth in the RMAC in assists (304), fifth in the RMAC in assists per game (13.2), 96th nationally in fewest turnovers (333), third in the RMAC and 57th nationally in field goal percentage defense (37.3), fifth in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (11), fourth in the RMAC and 91st nationally in scoring margin (5.8), first in the RMAC and 44th nationally in steals (219), second in the RMAC and 64th nationally in steals per game (9.5), first in the RMAC and 49th in three point field goal defense (28.5), second in the RMAC and 47th nationally in turnover margin (3.35), first in the RMAC and 86th nationally in turnovers forced (17.83) and 58th nationally in turnovers per game (14.5). As a team, the Skyhawks average 65 points and allow 59 points, making 40 percent from the field and allowing 37 percent.

Individually, Herrera is sixth in the RMAC in assists (75), seventh in the RMAC in assists per game (3.3) and steals (44) and 10th in the RMAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.99). Yocky is second in the RMAC and 79th nationally in defensive rebounds per game (6), second in the RMAC and 75th nationally in rebounds (191), third in the RMAC in rebounds per game (8.3), fourth in the RMAC and 74th nationally in steals (49), and fourth in the RMAC in steals per game (2.13).

First up will be a meeting with Westminster on Friday. The Griffins are 18-3 overall and 16-1 in RMAC play, currently tied for first with Colorado Mesa. Westminster is 8-2 away from home this season. Since facing FLC, the Griffins have defeated Colorado Mesa (61-57) and Western Colorado (66-52) at home the past two weekends.

Westminster is averaging 70 points and allowing 61 points, making 46 percent from the field and allowing a 38 percent clip. Denise Gonzalez continues to lead the way at 14.3 points and dishes out 95 assists. Hunter Krebs returned to action this past weekend after missing the games against Fort Lewis and Adams State and is second on the team at 12.8 points per game, along with 6.1 rebounds and has sent back 24 blocks. Olivia Elliss at 12.1 per game and Kaylee Carlsen at 10.1 per game round out the four scoring in double-digits. Sicilee Williams is close at 8.8 per contest.
To close the weekend, FLC will face Dixie State on Saturday which will also be the benefit game for the Griego Family. The Trailblazers are 12-9 overall and 8-9 in RMAC play, holding a 3-6 record away from home. During the last homestand, Dixie State defeated Western Colorado (67-56), but fell to Colorado Mesa (59-72). The Trailblazers average 69 points and allow 66 points, making 42 percent from the field and allowing a 39 percent clip.

Five players average at least 8.2 points per game led by 12.1 per game from Ali Franks, while Mariah Martin is at 10.4, Lisa VanCampen adds 9.6, Keslee Stevenson is right behind at 9.5 and Morgan Myers tallied 8.2 per contest.

A look around the RMAC has Colorado Mesa and Westminster tied for first with 16-1 records, Colorado School of Mines, CSU-Pueblo and UC-Colorado Springs are tied for third with 11-6 marks, Western Colorado and MSU Denver are tied for sixth with 10-7 records, Black Hills State and Colorado Christian are tied for the eighth and final RMAC Tournament spot at 9-8, Dixie State and Regis are tied for 10th with 8-9 records, Fort Lewis and South Dakota Mines are tied for 12th with 5-12 records, Chadron State is 14th with a 3-14 record, while New Mexico Highlands and Adams State are tied for 15th with 2-15 records.
