Big Run in Fourth Quarter Sends Women’s Basketball to Big Win Over Westminster

DURANGO, Colo. – Westminster had just made a push to take a three-point lead midway through the fourth quarter and the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team looked to be in trouble. Out of a timeout, the Skyhawks responded ending the game on an 18-6 run to take the 62-53 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday night inside Whalen Gym.

Westminster (18-4, 16-2 RMAC) entered the game receiving votes in the latest WBCA National Coaches Poll and were tied with Colorado Mesa for first in the conference. As it turned out, Colorado Mesa also lost on the same night, falling at Colorado Christian to keep the teams tied for the conference lead at 16-2 in league play.

The fourth quarter became one to remember for Fort Lewis (10-14, 6-12 RMAC) as they took a two-point lead just over a minute into the final frame when Jordan Carter hit a jumper in the paint. After an Alyssa Yocky free throw pushed the lead to 44-41, the Griffins came back with a 6-0 run to take a 47-44 lead with 6:05 to play in the game.

Out of a timeout, the Skyhawks responded in a big way with Syndey Candelaria driving for a layup. After back-to-back strong defensive series, Kayla Herrera drilled a pair of three-pointers to force Westminster into a timeout and leave FLC with a 52-47 lead with 4:22 to play.

The Griffins fought back to within three a couple of times, including on a jumper in the paint by Olivia Elliss with a minute to play. FLC continued to run the offense and Candelaria again got loose for a drive down the lane for two pushing the lead to five with 30 seconds to play.
FLC sunk four straight free throws down the stretch to take the victory.

Early on, FLC jumped out to a 10-4 lead just over three mintues in when Candelaria hit a trey off an assist by Yocky. The lead stretched to six a couple of times, with the last coming on a jumper by MorningRose Tobey for the 14-8 lead with 2:30 to go in the opening quarter.

Westminster answered back with an 8-2 run to tie the score before a jumper by Abigail Jensen closed the quarter leaving FLC with the 18-16 lead after one.

Neither team scored over the first three minutes of the second quarter when a layup by Hillary Weixler tied the game at 18. The Griffins pushed out to a three-point lead before FLC closed the half strong getting points from Yocky on a pair of baskets in the paint leaving the Skyhawks with the 29-25 halftime lead.

The third quarter was also slow to develop offensively when a three-pointer in the corner by Tobey right before the shot clock expired jumped the lead to four with a minute left in the third quarter. FLC took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter as a Hunter Krebs three-pointer was countered by a jumper by Yocky for the 41-38 lead.

That setup the wild ending in the fourth quarter.

Yocky posted a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, along with three assists and a block. She shot 7-15 from the field and 3-4 at the foul line. Herrera reached double-figures with 10 points, connecting on a pair of three-pointers and had three rebounds. Candelaria added nine points and Aubre Fortner tallied eight points. Both Candelaria and Fortner tallied two steals each. FLC shot 39 percent (22-57) from the field, 46 percent from three (5-11) and 81 percent at the foul line (13-16).

Olivia Elliss led Westminster with 16 points on 5-10 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Krebs tallied nine points and Kaylee Carlsen had seven points. FLC contained the RMAC Preseason Player of the Year Denise Gonzalez keeping her to just five points on 2-8 shooting and 1-7 from three. As a team, the Griffins shot 18-57 (32) from the field, 4-25 (16) from three and 13-16 (81) at the foul line.

FLC held the edge on points off turnovers (15-12), bench points (19-12) and points in the paint (28-26).

The Skyhawks will remain at home tomorrow (Saturday) night when they will face Dixie State starting at 7:30 p.m. inside Whalen Gym. The Trailblazers cruised to a 79-63 win over Adams State on Friday night.
