Women’s Basketball Shows Resiliency in Win at Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. – Playing down a few players and with some battling illness didn't slow down the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team as they fought through all of that to pull out a tough road win 76-74 over Western Colorado Saturday inside Paul Wright Gym.

FLC (12-15, 8-13 RMAC) used a big spurt in the fourth quarter to pull ahead by as much as eight and then fought off a pair of late ties by WSCU (16-9, 12-9 RMAC) to pick up the win.

The Skyhawks pulled out to a 61-58 lead just over a minute into the fourth when Aubre Fortner dialed long distance. After the Mountaineers came back to tie the game at 61, a layup by Abigail Jensen sparked a 7-0 run. Jensen made it two straight baskets after hitting another layup on the next trip down the floor and after Alyssa Yocky sunk a three-pointer, FLC held a 68-61 lead with 6:06 to play.

A pair of foul shots by Jordan Carter had the lead out to eight at 70-62 when Western Colorado made their push. The Mountaineers scored the next seven points to pull to within one and then tied the game at 72 on a three from Samantha Coleman with 1:59 to play.

The Skyhawks continued to come up with big shots as Fortner hit a jumper near the free throw line to move FLC back ahead at 74-72. Jessie Erickson answered with a layup for Western Colorado to knot the game at 74 with 1:22 to play.

Both teams then made defensive plays to keep the game tied, as a missed shot by FLC was defended on the other end when the Skyhawks came away with a steal by Fortner with 38 seconds to play. FLC then ran the clock down and as the ball got inside to Carter, she tried to go up for the shot, but was fouled with 11 seconds to play. Carter would hit both to give FLC a 76-74 lead.

Out of a Western Colorado timeout, they went with a skip pass to Coleman in the corner for a three-pointer that was challenged by the Skyhawks and it hit off the side of the backboard and was rebounded by Yocky. With just two seconds to play, the Mountaineers still had a foul to give before getting into the penalty and after fouling on the in-bounds pass left under a second to play, FLC threw the ball back in and ran off the final tenths of a second to claim the victory.

To start the game, neither team held more than a three-point lead in the first quarter as Western Colorado grabbed a 5-2 lead two minutes in and after the teams traded several leads, a jumper by Carter and then a layup by Sydney Candelaria moved FLC out to the 15-12 lead with 35 seconds to play in the quarter. The Mountaineers closed the quarter with a layup to leave FLC with the 15-14 lead through the first 10 minutes.

A Carter layup nearly three minutes into the second quarter pushed FLC back in front by three at 25-22 and then a few minutes later, Yocky stepped back and drilled a three-pointer to give either team their largest lead of the first half at the time of four at 30-26.

Western Colorado answered going on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of five at 35-30 with 2:53 to go before the break. The lead got as high as six before FLC chipped the deficit down to three at halftime when Carter closed the half with an offensive rebound and put back leaving Western Colorado with the 39-36 lead.

To start the third quarter, the Mountaineers moved the lead out to eight a pair of times, but FLC kept fighting back. A 10-0 run for Fort Lewis followed with Carter starting the run with a jumper. Kaitlyn Romero added a layup, Carter then hit a jumper before a pair of free throws by MorningRose Tobey and a layup by Candelaria ended the run that left the Skyhawks with a 48-46 lead.

A three-pointer by Tobey and then a layup from Tobey kept the lead at five for FLC before WSCU trimmed two points off the lead leaving FLC with the 56-53 lead entering the wild final frame.

Four reached double-figures for the Skyhawks with Carter leading the way with 21 points on 8-16 shooting, along with two rebounds and a blocked shot. Fortner went for 11 points and then both Candelaria and Yocky tallied 10 points apiece, with Yocky just missing another double-double with nine rebounds. FLC went 28-62 (45) from the field, 7-17 (41) from three and 13-17 (77) at the foul line.

The Skyhawks held the advantage on points off turnovers (8-7), second-chance points (15-9), bench points (24-23) and points in the paint (38-28).

Chandler Willis led Western Colorado and all-scorers with 23 points, while Coleman added 15 points as four Mountaineers reached double-figures. WSCU went 26-60 (43) from the field, 11-29 (38) from three and 11-14 (79) at the foul line.

FLC will close out the regular season this coming Friday when they will host Adams State for senior day inside Whalen Gym starting at 5:30 p.m.
