Softball Remains on the Road this Weekend at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The road swing will continue for the Fort Lewis College softball team as they will continue Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play when they face Adams State in a pair of doubleheaders Saturday starting at noon and Sunday at 11 a.m. in Alamosa.

FLC (5-12, 0-4 RMAC) battled against then No. 22 Colorado Mesa this past weekend before falling in all four games. The finale of the series the Skyhawks came close as they pushed the Mavericks before Colorado Mesa scored over the final few innings to pull away.

So far this season, Angelique Elemen continues to lead the way in almost every category as she holds a .423 batting average, 22 hits, 15 runs scored, six doubles, eight home runs, 14 RBI, 52 total bases, 1.000 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. She leads the team in each one of those categories. McKenna Hefley holds a .327 batting average with two home runs and seven RBI. Pilar Gutierrez is close to a .300 average sitting at .293. Taylor Hollestelle has hit four home runs and drive in 11, while Kylie Hefley has three home runs and eight RBI.

In the circle, Emily Morris leads the team in wins with two and has a 4.34 ERA in 29 innings worked. She's tallied 24 strikeouts to just nine walks. Kassidy Trumbo has a win in 23.1 innings and Dana Dwyer also adds a win in 10 innings. Mandy Lorenson picked up the other victory earlier in the season. Kelly Decker has worked the most innings at 31.2 in 10 appearances.

FLC ranks in the top-five in the RMAC and top-100 nationally in home runs per game, checking in second in the RMAC and 18th nationally (1.12), 90th nationally in slugging percentage (.436) and fifth in the RMAC in triples per game (0.12). As a team, FLC holds a .270 batting average and allow a .314. In the circle, the Skyhawks have a 6.17 ERA and opponents are at 4.21.

Individually, Elemen ranks high in the conference and nationally in multiple categories including first nationally in home runs (8), first nationally in total bases (52), first in the RMAC and 15th nationally in home runs per game (0.47), second in the RMAC and 21st nationally in slugging percentage (1.000), second in the RMAC and 36th nationally in hits (22), fourth in the RMAC in toughest to strikeout and fifth in the RMAC and 32nd nationally in doubles (6). Hollestelle is third in the RMAC and 23rd nationally in home runs (4). Kyle Hefley is ninth in the RMAC and 67th nationally in home runs (3) and is third in the RMAC and 74th nationally in sacrifice flies (1). Morris is third in the RMAC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.67).

Elemen has already set the program record for home runs and is currently at 48 and set the program mark for RBI and is currently at 156. Her 48 home runs are tied for fourth in RMAC history and she is just 14 RBI away from breaking into the top-10 in RMAC history.

Some of her other numbers include 187 hits, 40 doubles, 102 runs scored, 518 putouts and 372 total bases. Right now Elemen is fourth in program history in hits, fifth in doubles, just four away from tying for the top spot, second in total bases, just one away from tying for the top mark, sixth in runs scored and seventh in putouts.

It's been a tough start to the season for Adams State as the Grizzlies are 0-16 overall and 0-4 in RMAC play having played all their games away from Alamosa until this weekend. Adams State opened the season in Rio Rancho along with the Skyhawks, but the teams didn't face each other with the Grizzlies nearly winning the final game against Oklahoma Baptist before falling short, 7-8.

This past weekend they played in an RMAC pod series in St. George and nearly took down then No. 13 Dixie State before the Trailblazers rallied for the 4-2 win. Shelby Haskins leads the team with a .292 batting average, along with two home runs and four RBI. Breanna Shaffer has the top average on the team at .429 but has only had seven at-bats this season. Angelo Micciulli is at .368 and Rachel Mobley adds a .333 average. The Grizzlies have a .247 team batting average and allow a .411 clip.

In the circle, Brittany Phillips has logged the most time with 35.1 innings and has an 8.52 ERA. Jade Garbiso has an 8.23 ERA in 32.1 innings. As a staff the Grizzlies have an 8.95 ERA and opponents have a 1.97 ERA.
