Lacrosse to Travel to Grand Junction to Face #15 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College lacrosse team will head up north to face #15 Colorado Mesa this Friday at 4 p.m. in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Skyhawks are 2-5 overall and 2-6 in RMAC play, as the games the past week against both Lindenwood and CSU-Pueblo went in the books as "no contests" but still count towards the RMAC standings.

Last time on the field against Adams State on April 12 the Skyhawks rolled to the 16-1 win. Delaney Benson and Abby Escandon each scored four goals, while Ann Nelson and Maren Clark tallied hat tricks. Rachel Hurst added two goals in the win as well. Daris Wienk was strong in net coming away with 10 saves to get the victory.

On the season, Escandon leads the team in points at 23 and in assists with 12. She's landed 90 percent of her shots on goal this year (20 shots, 18 on goal), along with a game-winning goal, nine groundballs and three caused turnovers. Benson is second on the team in points at 15 and leads the team in goals with 13. She's also been accurate with her shots tallying 85 percent on net (26 shots, 22 on goal). Benson leads the team in free position goals with five and has nine groundballs, four caused turnovers and four draw controls. Hurst gives the team three with double-digit goals sitting right at 10, along with three assists. She's landed 87 percent of her shots on goal (23 shots, 20 on goal) and has added 14 groundballs, nine forced turnovers and 14 draw controls. Nelson has 12 points tallying eight goals and four assists and leads the team in draw controls with 19. Maren Clark is right at 10 points with nine goals and an assist.
Wienk has started all seven games in goal and has tallied 79 saves and has a 47 percent save percentage.

Last year, FLC and Colorado Mesa met twice, as they opened the year in Grand Junction and the Mavericks escaped with the 17-16 win. Kelli Warmouth had a huge game for the Skyhawks scoring eight goals in the contest.

In the rematch later in the season in Durango, again it was close before Colorado Mesa claimed the 13-11 victory. Warmouth, Escandon and Anna Dennison led the team with two goals apiece.

Colorado Mesa is 12-2 overall on the season and 6-2 in RMAC play, holding a 6-1 record at home. After falling to Regis, 23-10, back on April 6, the Mavericks picked up a pair of wins against Adams State (19-0) and Westminster (20-5).

Paige Elliott leads the team in scoring with 69 points, recording 52 assists. Olivia Hayden leads in the goal scoring department sending in 47 this year, along with 12 assists for 59 points. Marissa Leonardi adds 37 goals, Mary Koch with 29 and Kenzie Blackwell with 20. The team has played three different goalies this season with Lula Mitchell seeing most of the time playing in 11 games and is 9-1 with 53 saves. Cami Huff has played in six games and is 3-0 with 18 saves.

A look around the RMAC has Regis in first at 8-0, Lindenwood in second at 7-1, Colorado Mesa third at 6-2, Rockhurst in fourth at 5-3. All four of those teams have clinched RMAC Tournament spots. UCCS is fifth at 4-4 and Westminster is sixth at 3-4. The top six teams will advance to the conference tournament. CSU-Pueblo is right behind at 2-5, Fort Lewis is eighth at 2-6, Oklahoma Baptist is ninth at 1-6 and Adams State is 10th at 0-7.
