Skyhawks earn a split during Saturday's pod at Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colorado — A young Fort Lewis College volleyball team took another step in the right direction Saturday, earning a split during its road pod against Western Colorado University and No. 23 ranked Regis University.

Fort Lewis (4-7 overall, 4-7 RMAC) began the day with a gritty, come-from-behind victory over the hosting Mountaineers (3-4 overall, 3-4 RMAC) before finishing the afternoon with three competitive sets in a loss against a high-powered Rangers team (8-2 overall, 8-1 RMAC).

"I'm very happy with our performance. I think that, even though we didn't get two wins, the way we competed all day and against one of the top teams in the nation really showed our toughness," said FLC head volleyball coach, Giedre Tarnauskaite. "I think we're starting to show ourselves that we can compete at a very high level, so I was pleased with the outcome."

Match One vs. Western Colorado (25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 25-22 and 15-8)

The Skyhawks wiped away a 2-1 deficit in Saturday's first match against the Mountaineers, behind some big-time efforts from outside hitters Alexa Treguboff and Madi Nash.

Nash accounted for five kills and two service aces in FLC's 25-22 win in Set Four, finishing the match with 17 kills, three aces and a career-high 20 digs to complete her all-around performance.

Treguboff joined Nash in double-figures with 15 kills and nine digs as the duo combined for 36.5 of the Skyhawks' 71 points between the two of them.

"I'm really proud of both our pins in Madi and Alexa. I've said it before this season, but we have to show up on the outsides in order to give teams a different look, offensively," Tarnauskaite said. "Madi is a true competitor and has a good volleyball IQ. She switched up her shots when she needed to and gave us a big boost, offensively. She was also a big lift, defensively, with her digs that kept the momentum going for us. We were able to steal some points and force the action."

With momentum back on their side, the Skyhawks jumped out to an 8-1 lead in Set Five en route to the 15-8 clinching victory.

Fort Lewis received key defensive contributions down the stretch from junior middle blocker Kendall Deeter, who came off the bench in Set Four and finished with a team-best six total blocks, including two kills and two block assists in Set Five.

"We had to have a block and hadn't been able to get a lot of good, quality touches on our blocking at that point. Putting Kendall in there was really a momentum changer," Tarnauskaite said. "She made a big difference for us and made a lot of opposing hitters have to adjust their swings. Putting that kind of pressure on (WCU) gave us an opening and what we needed."

Sophomore middle blockers Avynn La Rose and Rylee Johnson added seven kills and six kills, respectively, while junior setter Makena Ahuna with 35 assists, three kills and eight digs.

Fellow setter, sophomore Payton Harmann, also made her first appearance for the Skyhawks in 2021, notching two kills and seven assists in her limited action as she works her way back from injury.

Defensively, sophomore defensive specialist led all Skyhawks with 24 digs, followed by Nash with 20 and junior outside hitter Cameron Callahan with 12.

Match Two vs. No. 23 Regis University (20-25, 25-27 and 18-25)

Saturday's pod finale for the Skyhawks pinned them against No. 23 ranked Regis University. Fort Lewis showed well in three tightly contested sets; nearly taking a set off the nationally ranked Rangers in Set Two.

Fort Lewis held leads in all three sets and committed just 14 attack errors while hitting .226 for the match, but were unable to knock off a deep and seasoned Rangers' squad that hit .296 for the contest.

"Regis is a very experienced team and it shows on the court," Tarnauskaite said. "They are a very athletic and dynamic team that gels well together, while we're still a team that is learning who we are and how we want to compete. I thought their experience really showed up, but it was fun to see our team answer that."

Nash completed her tremendous afternoon with a team-high 14 kills on a .313 hitting percentage, while Treguboff (10 kills) and Deeter (6 kills) helped pace the FLC offense.

Sophomore outside hitter Joviana Romero and Lopez paced the back row with 12 digs and 11 digs, respectively, while true freshman Lauren Burns —getting the start against Regis — was another bright spot as she finished with three kills against the Rangers and five total blocks on the afternoon.

Fort Lewis will have a Bye Week next weekend before concluding the regular season with a home pod against Chadron State College (11 a.m.) and Colorado Christian (5 p.m.) on Saturday, March 20.

The Skyhawks currently sit ninth in the RMAC standings, with the top-8 teams advancing to the RMAC Tournament. So while FLC has a 14-day break between competition, Tarnauskaite said the team will be hard at work making their final tune-ups in preparation for a run at the postseason.

"This gives us time to really iron out things we need to work on. It's not going to be a time where we take time off and relax because this will be a time to really put in the work," Tarnauskaite said. "We want to come out strong for our last pod at home and for our Senior Night. We want to make our final push to make the RMAC Tournament and try to punch our own ticket."
