Lopez reaches 1000 career digs in 3-1 win over Westminster College

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Senior libero Kamryn Lopez registered 19 digs in a four-set win over Westminster College on Saturday, becoming the 15th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career digs. Lopez's defense was instrumental as the Skyhawks improved to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

"I am excited for Kam's accomplishment. She came through in clutch moments tonight so it makes her milestone even more special," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "I'm proud of the team as a whole, as well. After a tough journey we stuck to our game plan and pushed through as a team."

Fort Lewis hit .229 for the match, the team's best offensive mark since a four-set win over New Mexico Highlands on September 6. The Skyhawks topped the Griffins defensively, out-blocking the home squad 11.0-6.0 and out-digging the opposition 59-55. Fort Lewis continued to be a tough serving team, picking up seven aces while peppering the receiving units to keep the Griffins out of system.

The offense was led by junior JJ Curry and senior Rylee Johnson who each put away 14 kills while hitting over .333 for the match. Curry's kill number established a new career high in the effort while Johnson matched a season best. Junior Lauren Shea followed with 12 kills to go along with five blocks. Freshman Ella Butler added dimension to the offense, putting away five kills (.385) and a pair of service aces. Sophomore Jade Martinez picked up a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs while leading the season with three service aces. Lopez led the team with 19 digs, and senior Joviana Romero came away with 10 on the night.

Set One (31-29)
The Skyhawks built a lead in the first after a slew of Westminster miscues, but the home team battled back to take a 6-5 lead off a back row swing to the left pocket. Curry kept her team in the lead with a trio of kills down the line, followed by an authoritative slice from Shea for an 11-7 lead. The Griffins battled to get to double-digits, but defense at the net resulted in back-to-back blocks for a 16-10 edge. Westminster remained pesky, though, rallying with a run to force a timeout at 16-14. The set became tied at 18-18 after a pair of tough serves caught the Skyhawks off balance to send the teams into another timeout. The teams tied two more times before Fort Lewis found set point on a service error. The Griffins answered to knot it up, and the set extended to extra points before a solo block from Johnson and an uncontested kill by Ella Butler ended the set in a 31-29 final.

Set Two (25-20)
Johnson pounded away her fifth kill of the afternoon to give Fort Lewis a 7-4 lead in set two, and the lead grew moments later with a quick Curry kill that found the line. The lead remained in the hands of Fort Lewis throughout the midway point of the set, but Westminster was relentless in its pursuit and tied it up at 15's. Westminster pushed for a slight lead out of a timeout, but Curry delivered a pair of kills to tie the set again, this time at 18-18. Shea came to play from there, racking up two kills and a brick wall solo stuff to give her team the 21-19 edge. The Skyhawks continued to press and earned set point on an attempt that carried long. Fort Lewis found the two-set lead on the ensuing play when a free ball dropped outside the end line for a 25-20 score.

Set Three (23-25)
The Griffins started to get their middles involved early in the third, cutting a shot right of the block to trail by one at 6-5. The Skyhawks earned separation in the following points, picking up kills from Shea and Johnson to bring on a timeout with the score at 12-7. Fort Lewis held onto the lead as the set trailed on, but the Griffins stayed within striking distance as a Curry kill made it 18-14. Sophomore Alexis Hobie pounded away her first kill of the match after being subbed in, making it a 22-19 score. The Griffins fought back to make it a competitive close to the set, taking over the lead at 23-22 before a Hobie kill notched it at 23 apiece. Westminster ended the set with a pair of points to stay alive in the match.

Set Four (25-22)
The teams traded points to begin the fourth before a three-point advantage found the Skyhawks off a solo stuff from Butler. The Skyhawks' lead extended to 12-7 with a Shea kill, and the team remained ahead as Fort Lewis closed in on the 20-point mark. The blue and gold got the boost they needed out of a break, gladly taking a service error to bring things to 20-17. Curry extended the lead with her 12th kill of the match, and the set win drew even closer with a serve into the net from the Griffins. The home team held off match point with a string of points, making it a 24-22 score with a savvy tip over the outstretched arms of Butler and Shea. Shea called game with her 11th kill of the match, cutting a cross-court shot through the block to end it in a 25-22 score.
