Reyes scores in 3-1 loss to #10 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. – Sophomore Sabrina Reyes netted her second goal of the season as the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 final to No. 10 Colorado School of Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday night. Fort Lewis drops to 4-9-1 overall and 3-5-0 in league play while Mines improves to 10-1-3, 7-1-2 RMAC.

The Orediggers outshot the Skyhawks 18-8 for the match, including a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. In addition to Reyes' shot on target, sophomores Julia Johnson and McKenna Ford shipped in shots for the match. Senior Madyson Barela came off the bench and led the team with two shots. Sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum played all 90 minutes between the pipes and had six saves along the way.

"I'm proud of the mentality tonight. We played with courage, and outside of a few mistakes that young teams make, we had a competent performance," sid head coach Damian Clarke. "Three freshmen started on the back line and played really tough. In addition, I thought that Elizabeth David had a very good game in her efforts to keep us the ball."

Rosenbaum was tested early and made a pair of saves within the opening ten minutes of play. The Orediggers eventually broke through in the 21st minute when Amena Nelson collected a free kick from Jordan Barnhart in the box and battled past freshman Cecilia Marlowe for a sliding score. The Skyhawks found the equalizer eight minutes later, finding a favorable field position after drawing a foul just outside the box. Reyes lined it up and beat the opposing keeper top right for her second goal of the season to make it 1-1.

The teams were evenly matched over the ensuing 15 minutes of play, but Mines made the most of a late opportunity to find a late 2-1 lead heading into the break. Rosenbaum made the initial save on a bouncing shot from Ava Harman, but the deflection found the feet of Afton Rasco who finished the job for the go-ahead goal. The Orediggers held a 9-6 edge in shots through 45 minutes of play, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Mines had its first quality look moments into the second half, breaking away down the field for a one-on-one opportunity with the Skyhawks trailing. The shot drifted high of goal to keep it a one-goal contest. The Orediggers were able to add their third goal of the match in the 58th minute when Laura Butler crossed one from the far side to Ava Harman who was positioned in front of an awaiting Rosenbaum. The Mines attacker found space and popped it over the Fort Lewis keeper for her first goal of the match.

The home squad looked to have another opportunity to pad the lead in the 62nd minute as the charging attacker was facing just Rosenbaum on a breakaway. The Mines player wanted the left pocket, but Rosenbaum made a veteran move and preserved the score with her sixth save of the match.

Fort Lewis saw its second corner of the match in the 76th minute and nearly pulled within one as a header from freshman Rachel Peebles drifted just left of the near post. From there, it was freshman Anna Tucker who tested the opposing keeper one final time. This attempt came with five minutes on the clock, but a highlight save held it at a two-goal deficit as time expired from Stermole Stadium.

Fort Lewis (4-9-1, 3-5-0 RMAC) is back in action on Sunday when the team heads across town to face Regis University for an 11:00 p.m. kickoff from the Regis Turf Field in Denver. Regis sits at 8-4-2 overall and 7-0-1 in league play. The Skyhawks trail the all-time series 7-12-3 and dropped last season's meeting by a 3-2 final at home.
