Skyhawks drop 1-0 match versus league-leading Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – A go-ahead strike in the 70th minute propelled the Regis University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of Fort Lewis College in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Sunday afternoon. The Skyhawks wrap up the regular-season road campaign with a 4-10-1 overall record and a 3-7-0 mark in the RMAC.

The Rangers maintain first-place positioning in the league with a 10-3-2 overall mark and a 9-0-1 clip in conference matches.

Regis held a 25-12 shots advantage for the match, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore Riley Bravin was a key force between the pipes and earned a career-high 10 saves in 90 minutes of play. Sophomore McKenna Ford led the team with three shots, one on goal, in 90 minutes. The defensive trio of Elizabeth David, Rachel Peebles, and Cecilia Marlowe played the entirety of the match and held the Rangers below their RMAC goals per game average of 2.4.

Defense, which was exceptional for the entire match, held the Skyhawks in the match from the first whistle as the home team's first shot on target did not come until the 16th minute. The attempt from Regis' Ella Palmer was easily knocked away by Bravin in goal. Fort Lewis saw an opportunity in the 20th minute when Reyes, the goal scorer in Friday's match, sent a shot low left. The reigning RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week made a stout move and held the contest scoreless into the late minutes of the half.

The Rangers put up a pair of shots in the final minutes of the half, but neither made their way on target thanks to the Skyhawks' backline. Regis boasted a 12-5 edge in shots for the half while both teams earned three shots on goal.

In the second half, the home team picked up right where they left off by sending three shots on goal through six minutes of play. The Skyhawks had an opportunity in the 53rd minute as David lined up a free kick 30 yards out. The sophomore put one on target, but a save by the opposing keeper kept Fort Lewis off the board. Despite the consistent presence on the back line, the Rangers were able to connect for the 1-0 lead in the 70th minute with a goal from Palmer. The forward settled a cross from Natalie Bunch at the top of the box and went low right for her second goal of the season.

Ford challenged the keeper a pair of times down the stretch, and Madyson Barela got the Skyhawks' final shot off with under a minute to play as the conference slate ended in a 1-0 final.

"It's always disappointing to lose, but we have to acknowledge that there are different ways to lose," said head coach Damian Clarke. "The team played the most competent football we've seen all season--from front ot back all weekend. This is with seven to eight freshmen putting in big minutes. The coaches knew that we could be a capable team this year, and the girls have fought to grow into this. We are looking ofrward to the last three games on Dirks Field so we can send this senior class off right."

Fort Lewis (4-10-1, 3-7-0 RMAC) is back home for its final three matches of the regular season. The Skyhawks will face Black Hills State University on Friday, Oct. 21 for a 7:00 p.m. match, followed by a Sunday afternoon showdown against MSU Denver. The team closes it out on Wednesday, Oct. 26 against Western Colorado University for senior night.
