Volleyball drops three set match to No. 1 MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. – Facing the top team in the country, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team could not muster an upset in a 3-0 loss to MSU Denver on Saturday. Fort Lewis falls to 8-14 overall and 6-10 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with two matches remaining on the schedule. MSU Denver improves to 23-1 overall and 16-0 in the league to claim the regular-season title.

MSU Denver hit at a .264 clip while holding Fort Lewis to just a .009 mark for the match. Sophomore Alexis Hobie led the team with eight kills to go along with three blocks. Senior Joviana Romero played in the final two sets and picked up four kills. Sophomore Sarah Wilkey led the team with 10 digs, her first double-digit dig outing since September 6th. Freshman Ella Butler had four blocks to bring her season total to 51.

"Playing MSU Denver is never an easy task, and we did well trying to stop their offense with our blocks and defense," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We needed to answer back with our offense, and unfortunately we fell short. These are great learning moments for us, and matches like this give us points of focus for the last week of the regular season."

Set One (18-25)
The Skyhawks look uncomfortable as the match kicked off and found themselves out of system en route to a 6-1 deficit. Fort Lewis earned a side out and poured on a handful of points thanks to controlled blocking and tough serving to make it 8-7. The blocking continued to pester the Roadrunners who were forced into a timeout after a wall from Hobie and Butler made it 11-9. MSU Denver managed to pull away in the ensuing points before a crafty setter dump from Lambos made it an 18-11 score. While the block was stout early on, the Roadrunners began to find ways to use hands to see set point out of the middle. A late run, fueled by pick-up defense from Sarah Wilkey, extended the set before another cut shot out of the middle ended things in a 25-18 final.

Set Two (10-25)
Much like the first set, Fort Lewis quickly fell behind by a 6-1 margin before a block could stall the momentum. The Roadrunners bit right back with a 10-0 scoring run to go ahead 16-1. Senior Rylee Johnson got her team back on track with a kill, followed by a clutch block to narrow the gap. Romero, fresh off the bench, wasted no time earning her first kill of the night as the score moved to 16-6. The teams traded points from there, but a thunderous kill on the right side ended the set in a 25-10 final.

Set Three
The Skyhawks wouldn't give up a run to begin the third set and earned a side-out kill by Romero to make it 4-2. Fort Lewis earned its first lead of the night with a block by Curry and Hobie, but a scoring run allowed MSU Denver to retake the lead at 10-8. After a break in action, the Skyhawks got stuck in a rotation that saw the Roadrunners jump out to a 17-10 lead. Fort Lewis earned a trio of points down the stretch, but a four-point run gave the home team a senior night sweep, 25-15.

Up Next
Fort Lewis will enjoy a home-court advantage one final time this season in a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday. First, it's a Faculty/Staff Appreciation night versus Adams State University on Friday at 6:00 pm. Followed by a Senior Night celebration on Saturday against New Mexico Highlands to wrap up the regular season.

The Skyhawks faced NMHU to open the conference portion of the season and picked up a 3-1 win in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Hobie led all players with 17 kills (.342) and added 11 digs for her first double-double of the year. Sarah Wilkey led the teams with 13 digs while Shea was the top defender at the net with four blocks.
