Skyhawks weather Savage Storm 99-85, complete sweep of regional opponents

ALAMOSA, Colo. – In its final regional matchup of the season, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team rolled past Southeastern Oklahoma State University by a final score of 99-85 Friday afternoon at the Adams State University Thanksgiving Classic.

The Skyhawks now find themselves at 5-0 overall for the first since the 2019-20 season while the Savage Storm fall to 1-2 overall on the year.

"When you are playing these primetime Division II games you need to have exceptional effort and tonight, we did just that," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Bob Pietrack said. "Tonight, we had tremendous effort up and down our roster across the entire game. We played our best game of the season offensively. Credit to SOSU, they are a great team, but we allowed three turnovers and missed one free throw. We preach these small things to our guys every day, and tonight they showed up and executed at the highest level."

Akuel Kot continued to show his dominance on the hardwood, supplying 34 points for FLC shooting 11-15 from the floor, 6-9 from the three-point line, and 6-7 at the free throw line. Fort Lewis' leading scorer also added two rebounds, three assists, one steal, and two blocks.

JaQuaylon Mays and Brenden Boatwright each scored 12 points with Junior Garbrah in tow with 11 points. Dunnell Stafford directed traffic tonight, grabbing 9 boards and 9 points while leading FLC with five assists.

Southeastern Oklahoma relied heavily on Jett Sternberger as the junior scored a team-leading 24-points. Brennen Burns, the Savage Storm leading scorer heading into tonight, was held to just 10 points.

"Credit to Mays, Garbrah, and Stafford for limiting SOSU offensively. Those guys had a phenomenal game defensively."

Fort Lewis held the advantage over SOSU in points on turnovers 13-4, but the Savage Storm topped the Skyhawks in both points in the paint 46-42 and bench points 34-28.

The Skyhawks were locked in from tip-off, exchanging early baskets with the Savage Storm until taking a 13-point lead just five minutes in capped off by a three-point jumper from Trevor Trost near the top of the key.

Southeastern Oklahoma State found its footing shortly thereafter, outscoring Fort Lewis across the middle of the half to knot it up at 33 points each on a layup from Chandler Dickinson with six minutes left in the half.

The Savage Storm would only score ten more in the opening half as the Skyhawks pulled away once more. Kot beat the buzzer with a three-point jumper in the left corner, securing a 55-43 lead for FLC.

Out of the half, it was all Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks continued to dominate on the offensive glass, leading by as many as 20 points down the stretch and not allowing SOSU to come within as close as a seven-point differential.
