Kot leads Skyhawks to resilient win over Grizzlies in RMAC opener

ALAMOSA, Colo. – After shooting a combined 27.8% across the field in the opening half, who other than Akuel Kot to lead the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team with 34 points to a gritty win over the Adams State Grizzlies in the opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the season Thursday night.

Fort Lewis advances to 7-0 overall with a 1-0 RMAC mark: the best record to begin a season in program history. Adams State falls to 2-5 overall alongside an 0-1 RMAC record.

"This was a tough game tonight," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Bob Pietrack said. "We went on the road to our rival's house on the opening night of conference play. Throw records and rankings out the window, Adams has been a difficult opponent for nearly two decades. I'm really most proud of our guys and their ability to hang tough and step up in the second half. We didn't start off shooting the ball too well, but our defense held us in there and gave us a chance down the stretch."

Kot led all scorers tonight, picking up 34 points shooting 11-18 from the floor, 2-4 from the three-point line, and 10-13 at the free-throw line. Kot also led FLC with seven total rebounds and pick-pocketed a pair of steals.

Kolby Walker led the Grizzlies offensively with 18 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one block. Maison Adeleye provided an additional 14 points while Lamont Sanders and Chris Aibuedefe each added 13 points as well.

Junior Garbrah stood second in scoring for the Skyhawks with 18 points while adding three rebounds, one block, and one assist to his final line. Brenden Boatwright trailed just behind with 14 points.

"When you look at the box score it may be Kot with 34 points, but it's the combined effort of all our guys like Garbrah, Mays, Boatwright, and many more that really help us finish these tough games."

After a slow first half shooting just 34.2% from the field as a team, the Skyhawks bounced back in the second half to out-shoot the Grizzlies 57.7% to 46.1%.

In a tight contest with an equal 78 possessions, while being outshot across the board, it was rebounding that gave Fort Lewis the edge grabbing 42 boards to the Grizzlies 32.
