Skyhawks roll past Mountaineers 89-67 in RMAC home opener

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team shot a formidable 56.1 percent from the field tonight in route to an 89-67 win over the Western Colorado Mountaineers in its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game at home Saturday night.
 
Fort Lewis continues to remain unbeaten, advancing to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the RMAC. The Skyhawks extend the best start in program history and match an eight-game winning streak from last season. Western Colorado now falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in RMAC games.
 
"We really brought it back in the second half, but I thought we struggled defensively the first ten minutes of the game tonight," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Bob Pietrack said. "Our guys shot well tonight, bouncing back from Thursday against Adams. Western really challenged us from the outside and forced us to win down low. With the absence of Scottie (Dunnell Stafford) tonight I believe our guys stepped up for him in a big way to get the win."
 
Senior Brenden Boatwright led all players offensively tonight tallying 19 points shooting 8-11 from the floor and a perfect 3-3 at the free-throw line. JaQuaylon Mays nearly did it all on the hardwood tonight, supplying 16 points alongside seven rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
 
Kade Juelfs and Avery Rembao led the charge for Western Colorado scoring an identical 14 points alongside three assists and three rebounds each. Rembao also added a steal and one of the Mountaineers two blocks of the night.
 
Obi Agbim played a season-high 32 minutes in tonight's game, matching Mays with seven rebounds while also providing three assists and a team-leading two steals. Sekou Dembele finished just shy of a double-double with 10 points, eight rebounds, and a steal.
 
Fort Lewis dominated the post, out-scoring Western 54-18 on points in the paint. The Skyhawks had its second-best night of the season, shooting 56.1 percent from the floor to the Mountaineers 36.9 percent. Additionally, Fort Lewis limited Western to just two fast break points and did not allow a second chance point.
 
For the now third-straight game, FLC tallied 40+ rebounds with a season-high 42 tonight to Western's 29.
 
NOTABLES
-Obi Agbim's seven rebounds tonight is a new career-high.
-With his lone steal and three assists tonight, JaQuaylon Mays now leads the Skyhawks in both assists (22) and steals (12).
-Fort Lewis' 42 rebounds tonight matches the team's season-high set just last Thursday at Adams State.
-The Skyhawks 12 personal fouls tonight is the lowest of the season thus far.
 
NEXT UP
Fort Lewis will hit the road next week for its first two-game RMAC road trip of the season. The Skyhawks will open the week on Friday, Dec. 9, at New Mexico Highlands with a 7:00 p.m. tip off. FLC will then make the trip to Pueblo, Colo., for a matchup with Colorado State University Pueblo the following Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip-off against the Thunderwolves is slated for 7:30 p.m. Fans can stream both games for free on the RMAC Network.
