Skyhawks Drop Road Game to No. 13 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team fell in an 84-56 road contest to No. 13 Colorado School of Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday night. Fort Lewis drops to 2-19 overall and 1-14 in the league while Mines improves to 20-3, 15-2 RMAC.

Fort Lewis shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the field compared to 46.2 percent (30-of-65) for Mines. The Skyhawks shot 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from three versus 41.9 percent (13-of-31) for the Orediggers. Fort Lewis edged out Mines by a 40-31 margin in rebounds. The game's biggest difference came in the turnover category where the Skyhawks committed 30 to just 10 for the Orediggers. In turn, Mines benefitted from 40 points off turnovers compared to just six points for Fort Lewis.

Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria led the team with 17 points to go along with four rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson followed with 10 points and three boards. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams contributed eight points and four rebounds. Freshman Piper Terry led the team with six rebounds.

Sorenson opened the game with a layup to give Fort Lewis a narrow lead, but the Orediggers responded with 14-point scoring run over the following five minutes to go up 14-2. Candelaria slowed the momentum with a pair of free throws, but the home team continued to blaze ahead courtesy of sharp three-point shooting and stingy defense. Sorenson ended the quarter like the started it, adding another two points to her stat line, but the Skyhawks trailed 29-8 after one quarter of play.

Threes were the name of the game in the second quarter with Candelaria and Adams tallying two to match the opposition, moving the score to 35-19 with 6:20 to go. Redshirt freshmen Jana Conejero and Ava Strange each hit a three down the stretch to cut the Oredigger lead to 40-23 after two quarters of play.

The Orediggers benefitted from a 12-0 run midway through the third quarter before a three-point play from Candelaria saw the score at 61-30 with 4:37 to go. The redshirt senior continued to do her best to counter each Oredigger attack with her own scoring play, but the score would sit at 70-39 heading into the final quarter of play.

The Skyhawks saw points from Sorenson and Adams to start the fourth, moving the score to 79-33 with just over six minutes to play. Mines remained impressive from beyond the arc, extending the lead further before a three from redshirt sophomore Tayla Nez had the score at 84-51 with two minutes to play. Freshman Samantha Wattawa knocked down a three as time expired, ending the game in an 84-56 final score.

Up next, Fort Lewis (2-19, 1-14 RMAC) travels to take on Regis University (10-13, 6-11 RMAC) for a 4:00 p.m. start tomorrow in Denver.
